At the end of WW2 there was massive homelessness around the country – a pre-war shortage of housing had been made worse by the destruction of houses through bombing and a total halt in the building of new housing. Demobilisation of thousands of servicemen jacked this up into a crisis… As a result there was mass squatting of empty houses, and army camps and depots, around the country.
“Down in Brighton, VE day was celebrated with a merry scrunching of crowbars as dozens of hotels and big houses being kept empty for post-war summer visitors were taken over by homeless people. “Vigilantes” seems a strange name nowadays. I think the idea was that they were vigilantly scouring the streets for empty places and opening them, not letting a single home go unused. They were otherwise known as “The Secret Committee of Ex-Servicemen”. By the beginning of July there were 1,000 people squatting in Brighton alone and the movement was spreading to towns all along the south coast as well as to Essex, Birmingham, London and Liverpool. There were big meetings, lots of public support and massive press coverage. Churchill persuaded the press to stop mentioning what was happening – he reckoned it was spreading the idea introduced requisitioning powers (but not duties) for councils to take over empty property and made anti-squatting propaganda part of his campaign in the 1945 election…

Background
As you will be aware the Ministry of Justice published a consultation titled “Options for dealing with squatters” on the 13th of July 2011. This consultation closed on the 5th of October. The MOJ’s response to this consultation was published on the 26th October.
The Justice Secretary has now tabled an amendment to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill (‘the Legal Aid Bill’) (clause 26) which effectively criminalises the act of trespass in residential property (see appendix A). This is in spite of the fact that over 90% of the responses to the consultation were opposed to such a move. The purpose of this briefing is to ask you to oppose the amendment on Tuesday 1st November when it is debated in the House of Commons, or to support the amendments that have been tabled (and detailed below).
Many young people were engaged with this campaign, and we find it hugely disappointing that a message is being sent back to them that consultation with the Government is an ineffective and impotent exercise.
In addition we would suggest that the introduction of such a significant offence to this late stage of a parliamentary bill is entirely inappropriate. Such a criminalisation required proper consideration of its impacts, and we are seriously concerned that there has not been adequate time for this to take place, particularly considering the overwhelming opposition to such a move within the consultation responses.
Quick report Police moved on a picnic of concerned citizens and squatters.expressing their opinions about the criminalisation of squatting
A picnic occured tonight on old palace yard, just behind westminster abbey on celtic new year( Happy Samhain.) this place is an ancient gathering spot for the peoples of this land , was the place of tot hill fayre. an ancient fayre of free speech, and where the laws of the country where made in old druidic times To this place came a sleep out of squatters, homeless and concerned citizens, aware that the govt was trying to criminalise squatting despite in the recent consultation 96% of replies said they did not want the criminalisation. The govt is rushing through bypassing democracy to criminalise the homeless in a housing crisis for sheltering in empty buildings .with the punishment of 6 months in prison.Adding a clause to the legal aid bill,To be debated and discussed in parliament today tues 1St Nov. 4pm debate starts.
(Parliament is open 2.30pm-10pm for the public to visit .John Mcdonnel MP has booked room 20 for any concerned citizens to go to on this issue You can go in to lobby or Green card your MP. Many groups are calling for many people to come into parliament at this time. )
The police surrounded this group of people and despite repeated liason from legal observers and media, letting them know it was a peacefull picnic of the public,Including much free speech from many around the discussion. they proceeded to insist the picnic was a demonstration despite no banners,or evidence provided by the police as to why this new year picnic was a protest or demonstration. There was a lively and bravely focalised discussion of the many opinions around the assembled,,at points 200-300 people maybe,People from St.pauls and other occupations. Then after much discussion of options, other locations, possible arrest,as most began to move reluctantly the police moved around to encircle and began to arrest, .They proceeded to do Socpa warnings, and do random arrests of members of the public who had told them they where there to picnic. There were many people from many squats out on the streets tonight, united in coming out of the squats and into the streets. As some brave soul sister expressed we could be arrested hear or in our squats when this law will illegalise us. There were many people arrested as the police kettled at one corner of parliament square. Many people were snatch squaded and even journalists were arrested. Free speech denied again, this was a quick report, respect to all. Check www.squashcampaign.org www.squattershousingactiongroup.wordpress.com www.occupybritain.co.uk
A former headquarters of a property management company that rents empty buildings to tenants who act as guardians to prevent them from being squatted has itself been occupied by protesters.

The Dutch parliament has voted for a 55% cut in CO2 emissions by 2030, which would require the closure of all the country’s coal-fired power plants.
The unexpected vote on Thursday night by 77 to 72 would bring the Netherlands clearly into line with the Paris climate agreement, with some of the most ambitious climate policies in Europe.

Jeremy Corbyn has held on to his Labour leadership position, despite a purge that may have prevented around a quarter of potential supporters from voting in the contest. Corbyn’s renewed mandate will bring the coup against him to a conclusion, for now.
Corbyn was re-elected with 313,209 party votes, amounting to 61.8% of the total vote.
An inevitable end
In the lead up to the result being announced, the incumbent Jeremy Corbyn was strongly tipped to win. The latest YouGov poll had found that 62% of eligible voters indicated Corbyn as their preference for Labour leader. Only 38% said the same of Smith.
