Traingate more important than Tory abolition of human rights, says mainstream mediaOFF THE PERCH
The entirely fabricated ‘Traingate’ scandal is far more important that the Conservative government’s sinister plan to abolish our human rights, it has been decided.
Despite Justice Secretary Liz Truss announcing that the government intends to repeal the Human Rights Act, the continuing efforts of the Tories to dismantle the NHS, and the numerous scandals engulfing the Conservative Party, most of the mainstream media have decided that a lie told by Virgin Trains to smear Jeremy Corbyn should be reported as fact and given top billing.

Human Rights ALERT This is the bombshell dropped by Theresa May's government while the media whined on about Traingate | The Canary #olsx #humanrights #liberty

This is the bombshell dropped by Theresa May's government while the media whined on about Traingate | The Canary

While the mainstream media joined Richard Branson’s smear campaign against Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, the Conservative government dropped a bombshell. It is going to scrap the Human Rights Act.
On Wednesday 24 August, the front pages of almost every national newspaper – from The Telegraph to The Guardian – were railing against one thing, Traingate. Despite the fact that all of these outlets regularly report the plights of commuters on packed trains – commuters who have paid thousands of pounds a year for a season ticket which fails to guarantee them the dignity of a seat – suddenly this was all forgotten.
What they failed to mention was the most authoritarian and regressive decision taken by a UK government in modern history: the decision to push ahead with the scrapping of the Human Rights Act.

What is the Human Rights Act?

The Human Rights Act of 1998 guarantees every UK citizen the opportunity to defend themselves in domestic courts under rights granted them by the European Convention on Human Rights. As Liberty lays out, these are the rights given by the Act:
  • The right to life – protects your life, by law. The state is required to investigate suspicious deaths and deaths in custody;
  • The prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment – you should never be tortured or treated in an inhuman or degrading way, no matter what the situation;
  • Protection against slavery and forced labour – you should not be treated like a slave or subjected to forced labour;
  • The right to liberty and freedom – you have the right to be free and the state can only imprison you with very good reason – for example, if you are convicted of a crime;
  • The right to a fair trial and no punishment without law – you are innocent until proven guilty. If accused of a crime, you have the right to hear the evidence against you, in a court of law;
  • Respect for privacy and family life and the right to marry – protects against unnecessary surveillance or intrusion into your life. You have the right to marry and raise a family;
  • Freedom of thought, religion and belief – you can believe what you like and practise your religion or beliefs;
  • Free speech and peaceful protest – you have a right to speak freely and join with others peacefully, to express your views;
  • No discrimination – everyone’s rights are equal. You should not be treated unfairly – because, for example, of your gender, race, sexuality, religion or age;
  • Protection of property, the right to an education and the right to free elections – protects against state interference with your possessions; means that no child can be denied an education and that elections must be free and fair.

The infrastructure California needs to generate energy for electricity and clean water, which will be significant, need not blight the landscape. Designs like The Pipe demonstrate how the provision of public services like these can be knitted into every day life in a healthy, aesthetically-pleasing way. A finalist of the 2016 Land Art Generator Initiative design competition for Santa Monica Pier, the solar-powered plant deploys electromagnetic desalination to provide clean drinking water for the city and filters the resulting brine through on-board thermal baths before it is reintroduced to the Pacific Ocean.

Radical Think Tank – radicalthinktank@gmail.com

Radical Think Tank – radicalthinktank@gmail.com

Aims

We live in a time where people crave change. Galling inequality, environmental destruction, and the erosion of our democratic rights and freedoms call for a new kind of politics – a politics of participation where people can come together and take part in the development of policies which influence them. The question everyone is asking is “how can this be done”.
The Radical Think Tank aims to create a collective of researchers, activists and community organisers. It will research into grassroots campaigns (both past and present) in order to discover effective mechanisms to achieve this bottom up transformative political change. More generally it will research practical strategies and processes to create radical political participation.
The Radical Think Tank is an organisation that intends to be embedded in the communities in which it operates. We are a think and do tank. This means our intention is not simply to publish papers, but rather to popularise this effective knowledge and bring it to the heart of grassroots campaigning. We are already working with a number of campaigns across London to bring about more effective political organisation and strategy and to empower them to democratically develop approaches which best enable them to achieve their aims

After years and countless lives lost, the U.S. government is refusing to fully acknowledge the health crisis its burn pits in Iraq have unleashed upon the U.S. service members exposed to airborne contaminants, even after the VA was ordered by Congress last year to establish a registry for those who have suffered ill health as a result. But when it comes to the long-term hazards of burn pits, bombings, bullets and chemical weapons upon the people of Iraq, whose exposure is exponentially greater and continues to the present day, such recognition is virtually non-existent.

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation opposing the construction of a pipeline through their sacred lands and water sources got a boost from celebrity activists at a protest in front of the US District Court in Washington, DC.
The $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline would run from western North Dakota to Illinois, carrying hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil. It would also disturb sacred burial grounds and endanger water supplies at the Standing Rock Reservation and the neighboring communities, the tribe says.
Citing treaties with the US government, the Sioux have filed a federal lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers for failing to comply with environmental and historic preservation laws.
