  • Dorset and beyond

  • Please help to protect the Piddle Valley within the Bere Regis Parish- hurry there is not much time so please log-in and raise your objection to massive gravel extraction in Bere Regis and Wareham Forest NOW as we only have till 18.00hrs on Thursday 13th February to object!

Dorset County Council want to destroy part of the one of the most beautiful areas of the parish by digging up Philliols farm in Hyde, and build a road through Wareham Forest to extract the sand and gravel.
The Philliols farm tenants will lose their livelihood which they have enjoyed for generations and they will have to live in the middle of a gravel site. Other local residents will be similarly affected.

Much to everybody’s surprise the Bere Regis Parish Council “agree” with this proposal even though the site was rejected by the inspector following an appeal hearing last time it was proposed in 1996 when he stated: “I am led to the conclusion that the degrees of adverse impact gravel extraction would have on visual and residential amenity in the area pf the PA as a whole would be very serious indeed, and overall I am not convinced on the basis of evidence before me that the need for the gravel from this site is great enough to outweigh the damage that its extraction would do to the tranquil qualities of this pleasant and quiet corner of Dorset countryside”.

Shame on the local council, what are they thinking? A summary of objections are as follows:

    • There would be a detrimental impact on recreational land in the Wareham Forest and public rights of way affecting walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and horse riders who all enjoy the network of well-maintained forest tracks, making the area accessible to wheel-chair users.

The proposed site is a flood plain and is currently under a significant amount of water

Constructing a bund wall to prevent flooding on the parley court Farm site will increase the amount of flooding on the opposite bank and will pose a threat to homes in the Muscliff area and particularly to the mobile homes at Redhill

Damage will occur to the river bank whch will impact water flow rates downstream and will also impact on local wildlife - birds, fish, aquatic mammals

Recreational impact. Numerous joggers and cyclists and families enjoy the lovely wide open spaces

Environmental impact. Impact on wildlife and proximity to SSSI sites. From adders and sand lizards to the large deer population in this area and also the aquatic life- all will be displaced or harmed

Impact to the local community. The noise and traffic will severely impact the local community

The B3058 is not a suitable road for heavy lorries. The road is already dangerous and has seen several fatal accidents. With the extra traffic there will be an increased probability with the chances of accidents

The junction of B3058 and A35 is also an accident black spot. The roads are not capable of carrying the proposed uplift in traffic of up to 150 HGV movements a day

Impact to the village of Sandford can only be negative.Traffic, noise and loss of recreational facilities

Negative impact on tourism in the area, which will affect the local economy: the car parks are regularly full when the weather is good. Removal of the forest will cause other areas to be used leading to overcrowding and erosion

    • There would be a detrimental impact on Ecology
    • There would be a detrimental impact to the Landscape
    • There would be a detrimental impact on hydrogeology and groundwater
    • There would be a detrimental Impact on existing soils and BMV land type
    • There would be a detrimental impact on AQMAs with the noise and dust
    • There would be a detrimental impact in local tourism and rental businesses
    • There would be a detrimental impact on Sensitive Human Receptors from noise and dust
    • There would be a detrimental impact on settlements: Increased HGV traffic in Bere Regis, Wareham and Coldharbour
