Grow Heathrow is recruiting!

At the heart of resistance to the third runway in the village of Sipson, lies Grow Heathrow. Here an alternative to the cancerous growth of tarmac and pollution is lived everyday. Each subversive seed planted by these guerilla gardeners inoculates the community and land against certain death. Each relationship established builds bridges of hope for life. Each heart that falls in love with the land is connected to a body willing to defend it.

Amidst fresh proposals for a third and fourth runway, Grow Heathrow is under threat of eviction. We’re looking for bold spirits to occupy Grow Heathrow during the busy summer months. Some areas of land are not under threat of eviction and we need help to develop these as our defensive base.

Whether it’s for a few days, a few weeks or a few months, your presence is welcome.

We have restored three 40m long greenhouses where we grow vegetables, run workshops and host open days. We harness energy from two homemade wind turbines and some solar panels, have bicycle, metal and wood workshops, as well as a yurt and a straw bale house. And we’re organising with local residents to transform the Heathrow Villages into a radical self-sufficient community.

A short briefing on the upcoming Operation Vendetta called by Anonymous hacktivists.

Anonymous UK, as part of operation Vendetta, have planned to do a “Million Mask March” on November the 5th 2013 to Parliament from Trafalgar square starting at 6 pm.

 

If London is not your cup of tea there are plenty of other locations to choose from, where other Million Mask Marches will be starting at the same time and date. You can pick from Nebraska, New Jersey, Washington, California, India, Colardo, Melbourne, Massachusetts, Bulgaria, Adelaide, Romania and Hong Kong. The aim of this demonstration is to re-unite all Anonymous activists and spark the movement back into action against the persecution of internet freedom. The demonstration is against government censorship and tyranny.

 

The hacktivist group have called for a silent march to build up the suspense en route but it remains to be seen how the cookie will crumble during the event. According to online announcements the dead air will be broken with none other than the 1812 Overture and other pretty little ditties to really get the party going for as long as possible. “It is the target of Anonymous in 2013 to evolve the old traditional idea of protesting into the new. Anonymous have changed the rules, by turning this 'new tradition' of petition into more of a festival of ideas, performance art and symbolic new age discussion that has formed the political views of the youth of today.”

The Reclaim the Power Camp will be the culmination of months of hard work and preparation from a team of determined and dedicated volunteers. We are striving to create a beautiful space that will be empowering to all who want to seek solutions and take action on the social, economic, and climate crises. All should feel able to participate regardless of age, disability, or previous activist experience.
This article aims to tell you a little bit more about what to expect what you take part in Reclaim the Power; it will be updated as our preparations continue to take shape. You can also follow the latest developments on Facebook and Twitter.

Camp life

Many individuals are currently hard at work to ensure that, come Friday 16th August, a field in Nottinghamshire will have been transformed into safe and accessible temporary community where all can meet likeminded people, discuss the issues, and prepare for action. Once there, it will be up to everyone who attends to get stuck in and help sustain the camp; you don’t need to bring any skills, just bring your energy and enthusiasm!
The camp will be organised into four villages; these will be mini-communities where you can pitch your tents, eat, and socialise. Villages will hold daily morning meetings where important information will be shared and any necessary decisions taken. All camp meetings will run through an open, inclusive, and participatory process known as consensus decision making; this seeks to ensure all voices our heard and everyone is happy with meeting outcomes.
Besides the village structure there is a range of other resources for participants to both make use of and contribute to making happen:

• The Welcome Tent: providing you with a smile, camp booklet, and the knowledge of where to go. The welcome tent will also be the go-to point for any queries that may pop up.
• Kitchens: preparing delicious and energising vegan meals throughout the camp’s duration. You don’t need to bring your own food; just come ready to chop some vegetables and wash up!
• The Kids’ Space: activities and adventures to ensure our youngest participants are able to make the most of their time at the camp (and so are their parents or carers).
• Legal Support: on hand to offer legal advice prior to the action, arrest support during the action, and also to ensure all police activity is comprehensively monitored.
• Wellbeing: providing a space to go for all who feel they require some time-out from the sometimes hectic nature of an action camp.
• Tranquillity: dealing with any conflicts that may arise across the site and supporting everyone in sticking to the safer spaces policy.
• Medics: providing first aid if required.

The camp aims to be accessible to all, but if you have any particular questions relating to accessibility then please do contact us (info@nodashforgas.org.uk).
Things to bring: tent, sleeping bag, warm clothes, toothbrush/paste, loo roll, sunblock, waterproofs, a torch, and a desire to change the world.
Things not to bring: food (no need), dogs (except from support dogs which are more than welcome), knives (unwise), and belief that nothing can change.

Popular education

One of the most exciting things about Reclaim the Power is the diverse range of groups and individuals we know to be coming. This provides a fantastic opportunity for the sharing of experience to enable us to join to dots between social, environmental, and economic injustice. Our popular education programme will take place on Saturday 17th August. It will see an extensive range of workshops leading into a whole-camp evening gathering to synthesise the day’s learning. The workshops will cover a full range of interrelated subjects; Extreme Energy, The Cuts, Privilege, and Just Transition are just a small sample from our programme.
We already know groups such as UK Uncut, Platform, the UK Tar Sands Network, and Disabled People Against the Cuts will be contributing to this day; more groups will be announced in the coming weeks via our Twitter and Facebook page.
In addition to issue-based workshops, there will also be a range of practical workshops. These will include consensus decision making, digital campaigning, media messaging, building a protest camp, and direct action.
Of course, it’s not all super serious; the evenings (except the night before the action) will see broad range of music, comedy, and opportunities to let your hair down and dance! Acts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Mass action

Sunday 18th August will see the Camp prepare for mass action on the Monday; a full range of legal and practical support will be on hand to help people make decisions, find buddies, and train for whichever role they decide to take.
There will be a part to play for everyone, whether you wish to take direct action or take on one of many supporting responsibilities.
At present, action preparations are still taking shape. However, it promises to take a clear challenge the dangerous new dash for gas and the wider culture of corporate power.

The world’s largest seed corporation says it has dropped its bid to get more genetically modified crops onto the European market due to the wide-spread popular opposition. The biotech giant says it will expand its share of the natural seed market instead.
“We will no longer be pursuing approvals for cultivation of new biotech crops in Europe. Instead, we will focus on enabling imports of biotech crops into the EU and the growth of our current business there,” the US-based company said in an email statement.
The pending applications for GM crops –  6 types of corn, a soybean variety and a modified sugar beet –  will be withdrawn shortly, the biotech giant stressed.
Currently, only two GM crops are approved in Europe, the MON810 maize and a modified potato created by BASF, a German biotech company. However, much of the allowed genetically modified produce is delivered to Europe as animal feed.
Europe has long expressed its concern over the effects of GM food produce on human health.
Several EU member states, including France, Germany, Austria, Spain, have banned the cultivation of genetically-modified crops.

As you have probably heard – Monday saw the violent eviction of many homes on Rushcroft road, Brixton, met with strong resistance. I wanted to write down some notes of things that maybe haven’t been reported yet, especially in the mainstream media’s accounts. (This is quite difficult, Monday was very emotional in many ways. This is the neighbourhood I have grown up in and live in today, watching it be further impoverished as we lose yet more desperately needed public housing stock, seeing people lose their homes, and watching police and bailiff violence on my friends.)

A bit of background

Six beautiful buildings on Rushcroft Road were left in a state of disrepair by Lambeth council back in the 80s. People moved into these buildings, repaired them and turned them into homes. Some residents were given short life licenses for their flats whilst other flats were squatted (the law change that bans residential squatting was not relevant here, as squatters in these flats had a tacit licence from the council). With property prices soaring in gentrifying Brixton, Lambeth council suddenly took an interest in the Rushcroft Road buildings and decided they wanted them back so they could sell them off to private property developers. That these are people’s homes and important public housing, in a borough with massive overcrowding problems, an ever-growing housing waiting list, forced relocation of residents to seaside towns and cities north of London, didn’t perturb Lambeth council who went ahead and ordered the ‘National Eviction Team’ bailiffs, known for being particularly big and violent (and who had brought along their own FIT team with two bailiffs holding small portable cameras and filming people constantly).

Brixton residents gathered on Rushcroft Road from 6.30am to try to stop the evictions. The numbers were not huge, but despite numbers of around one hundred, from the start, people were fucking determined. Barricades were set on fire at the top of the street, paint found its way onto bailiffs and cops (with some supporters getting covered in yellow gloss too), people sat across the road blocking the progress of the cops and bailiffs (“There’s police and bailiffs, it’s just like the old days!” one woman was heard saying into her phone at the roadblock), people blocked front doors as bailiffs charged at them, barricades were put up inside the buildings (a boom would ring out across the street as the bailiffs knocked down doors of the flats from inside the building). Looking back that evening at the days events people remarked what a strong resistance it was from a smallish group. It felt like some fucking feat to have kept them off so long, to have made their job so difficult, to defend the homes as best as we could. Just imagine what we could have done with even more people.

The violence used by the bailiffs and police was incredibly heavy, disturbing and traumatising. As we defended the door to the last building I watched a friend be dragged by the bailiffs over broken glass, people getting strangled, one person on the ground being beaten up, bailiffs charging through the people with a crow bar, police pushing people who were trying to help others away to let the bailiffs get on with their violence. Rows of people were standing in front of the door to stop the bailiffs getting in. Bailiffs charge at doors to knock them down. Only this time they were charging as they would for a door but at people, massive crow bar in hand. I jumped out the way over a small wall in the front yard, and found a bailiff in my face about to attack. I shouted that I was nowhere near the door and wasn’t going to go there and he finally backed off. It was probably the most heavy violence I’ve ever seen – I’ve seen a fair amount of police and bailiff dickheadery. Several very experienced activists said they hadn’t seen anything like this in some time.

It was devastating to watch each block be taken from us, bailiffs tramping in and out, people made homeless, yet more loss of our public housing stock, and the continuation of class cleansing in the neighbourhood. Someone had left some of their vinyl collection outside on a window sill and a woman carried the vinyl down with us, hoping to return them to the owner or someone else who would offer them a home, as we were forced down the street with each eviction.

Two Lambeth council officers turned up to watch people be made homeless. I’m not sure why they thought it was OK to do this. People realised these men in suits were from the council and mobbed them, shouting at them for making people homeless and privatising housing and following them down the street as they tried to escape. They were properly hounded to the end of the street and felt so unsafe that the walked back the way they came to get protection from the police. This was a wonderful scene and will happen more often I hope.

Walking along Coldharbour Lane later on, we met some local people outside a shop who had been watching the evictions. They told us they were impressed and supportive of the fight we had put up against the police and bailiffs. “Is this the end?” one man asked. The other man answered confidently: “This isn’t the end. They’re squatters, they’ll find another way back in through some window…I like anarchists, they love sharing stuff.” We told them about Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth* which is starting an eviction resistance tree for the area to fight every eviction and they were supportive.

All evictions are shit. The law is shit. But it seems that the last building that was evicted was done so illegally. A man standing on the doorstep asked the police for paperwork as the residents had not been given any. Two policewomen mumbled back “we’ll get the paperwork” very unconvincingly. Then they stood back to make way for the bailiffs to charge at the rows of people to the door. When a friend told a policeman he had been hit in the head by the bailiff that was standing behind him the policeman responded “I’m too busy (being a dickhead)”

I think 4 people were arrested. I received a message about arrestee support at around midnight, but I had fallen asleep way before this. It sounded ace though: “Good vibe, local community support and outdoor living room going down opposite Peckham cop shop…”

And a big thanks to the love and solidarity on Rushcroft Road itself, the neighbouring streets, and from over Twitter.

Over the last couple of weeks, Brixton has seen bailiffs get shot at, an occupation and rowdy protest at Foxtons, and the burning barricades on Rushcroft Road. Brixton doesn’t like evictions.

There is a travellers community under attack in South Brent that needs support. The site has been there since 2007, and at some point had over 40 families living there. Since then some families left of their own accord. The public response has been in support of the site, the local people are behind the travellers and have no objections to travellers living there.

As it stands the site cannot be build on, it is in between two roads, a waste bit of industrial land. It could have been left to sustain the families that are living there now. A spokesperson from Marley Head said tunnels have started in the old service station fuel tank, there are two of them to play with. Two months ago there was a meeting between the council and the travelling community at the conservative club where, Sarah Wollaston, conservative MP, agreed they wouldn't come near the site unless someone complained. No locals did. The arrangement was they would let them stay until the school term was over. Dartmoor National trust weren't satiated with that. The council are now illegally evicting the South Brent traveller community and have cut their time from the 25th July to 25th June!

SchNEWS spoke to someone on site: “This is going to be another Dale Farm, we have families and kids here!”. If you can support please get down there and show solidarity! The site needs all the obvious materials such as pallets, pollyprop, winches etc.. and of course people power. There are old activists from Newbury there to get the spring chickens going. So get down there! Without help and support this will be another example of the Conservative government wiping out a community they do not deem suitable to their standards.

The travellers community in South Brent, Devon has been ousted out
The travellers site in South Brent has now been illegally evicted.
The eviction order was for the end of July but not so surprisingly the vultures swooped on the 27th of June, way before their allocated date. The site in South Brent is classified as commercial property. It cannot be build upon. So rather than having a community of people living there with kids in tow, supporting local businesses with their custom, the land owners would rather use it as a dump wasteland. They still haven't exactly explained what they are going to do with the land.
Schnews spoke to someone on site. No police or bailiffs turned up to evict them, but just three heavies from the Dartmoor National Trust. “They were trying to be forceful and were giving it large but ended up having to play it cool, as they didn't want a situation in their hands.” When people on site questioned the legality of it all the reply they got was the usual just doing their job spill. “They were being polite, but Hitler was probably polite.” The people on site put boulders up and set up ditches to stop them from entering and that got them ten more days. The land is not even owned by Dartmoor National Trust. It is owned by four people and according to the source SchNEWS spoke to not all of the owners were contacted before the eviction took place (so that is all totally legit).
Locals have not been informed of what the plans are for the site now that this community has been evicted. The local shops have been badly hit as they have lost so much custom. Who will eat the bread and drink all the brew now all those families have gone?
There are three people left on site at the moment. It is a beautiful spot to park up for the summer so if any revellers are out there that have some whoomph left in them, it is still not too late to join.

A war against Iran will implode the Middle East and will generate reprisals worldwide.

It looks like it won’t be a very long occupation, because the owner has already started all the procedures to kick us out and the police stops by at least once a day. The president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, proposed on Monday to sue the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for destroying the Bolivian economy through the implementing of privatization policies in previous governments.
Morales stated that the international organization that implemented privatization policies meant serious damage to the Bolivian economy.
He said that in Boliva “there were governments that were submitted to the IMF and international mandates that destroyed the national economy.”

A: At a massive arms fair which is planned to take place in London in just two months' time.

The UK government plans to invite human rights abusing regimes, such as Algeria, Bahrain, Columbia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, to London to court them and sell weapons. Hundreds of arms companies have booked to attend – and there are few limits on who is welcome.
A concerted campaign in Australia stopped their arms fair in 2008. Can you help do the same here?

When the arms fair took place in 2011, we challenged the opening night arms dealers’ reception at the National Gallery. One year later we put an end to an arms company’s sponsorship of the National Gallery. Now to stop the arms fair!

 We will give more updates as soon as we can, but the short story is that we urgently need people to come to site to help us plan. We’ve just heard that we lost our appeal in the UK’s second-highest court so the landowner now has a live possession order. We don’t know the landowner’s plans, so we don’t know whether or when he will apply for a warrant from the County Court for bailiffs, and beyond then whether or when he might hire bailiffs.

We are continuing to try to negotiate with the landowner to buy the land, and there is no threat until at least Monday.

To the powers that be: sorry to hear you are so full of fear, that with violent disregard for democracy you felt compelled to bulldoze the heart of the people’s park of parks into the ground. Last night's raid of Occupy Wall Street was a disgrace. Altogether lacking in grace. Claiming it was a health hazard is a ruse that's been in use since the eviction of Martin Luther King's version of Occupy, "Resurrection City," back in 1968. To be said with an incredulous New Yorker's accent: "And your tear gas isn't a health hazard?"
Just what is it you are so afraid of? Is it because you realize that your powers that be are in truth the powers that were? That the corporate pyramid scheme you are trying so desperately to prop up is reaching the end of it's road? Sorry for the inconvenience, but we're changing the world. We are here to offer something new. Don't fear us, join us. Celebrate the arising of hope, possibility and community. We are discovering that true power is shared power.
We are creative, we are adaptive, we are resilience itself. You can cut this branch, but a thousand more will grow. All you are doing is building up our immune system. As a new Occupy protest song by the Hawaiian singer, Makana, goes, "We are the many, you are the few." And could you but realize it, you are Us too. We are the 100% and we're not going anywhere.
We are awakening from the false dream we have been relentlessly sold, and have relentlessly bought. It is, in fact, a nightmare paradigm of a commodified world, a lifeless world of objects, separation and scarcity. We are awakening to a new possibility, where the true abundance of this Earth is no longer hoarded. Where relationships are not transactions. Where your well being is my well being is the planet’s well being. That old dog eat dog eat dog story is a myth. We are celebrating a new story that is as old as life. Collaboration is where it's at. Co-operation has created this incredible complex ecosystem called Earth that sustains and delights us. The competitive aspect of evolution is for the juvenile species. It’s time we grew up. It’s time we learned to share. From rainforests to coral reefs to human communities, we are inextricably intertwined in gorgeous webs of interdependence. This is what democracy looks like; planet to person, person to planet.
We are not afraid. This movement is here to stay, here to grow, here to evolve. I'm excited to see what new form it will take. Every time you try to bring this surprising, thriving movement to the ground, it grows ten fold. From the pepper spraying in the early days of Occupy to the bridge arrests of 700 people - thanks. You are radicalizing a new generation, and giving old radicals a brand new spark.
We have much to learn from the people’s movements of Spain and Greece that emerged from the Arab Spring. They didn't stop at taking the square. As time went on, they moved into the neighborhoods, offering real solutions to immediate problems in real time, together, through local general assemblies and working groups. A sign left behind in one of the Spanish people's camps read, "we have not left - we have moved into your consciousness."
This movement is not bounded in space. It's as boundless as an open heart. It's the opposite of contraction into fear. The crisis of this moment in our movement, as camps continue to be evicted, will only speed our evolution into something even more powerful, more effective, more creative.
I have been coming to Liberty Square since the first day, and each day I have found something new, something rich, something inspiring. I know we will find our next steps, together, with that same spirit of limitless possibility that has made this movement a touchstone in our journey towards a just and compassionate world, a world that works for all life. Love is the movement.

The newly formed Black Katz Kollektive has within the last hour occupied County Hall on the south side of Westminster Bridge facing the Houses of Parliament, with banners unfurled down the side of the building. Their message is simple: stop the war, mourn the dead, heal the wounded (see full communique below). They have not given a time at which they plan on coming down. Their aim is to highlight domestic and global conflicts and austerity measures and to spur the kind of protests recently seen in Turkey and Brazil.

We call for Section 144 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill which criminalises squatting in residential properties to be repealed. The law is not working:
- Homeless people are being penalised. Many are finding themselves on the streets who would otherwise have found shelter in abandoned residential properties
- Some have ultimately gone to jail for using empty buildings to put a roof over their head
- Contrary to government propaganda, the law is doing nothing more to protect people in their homes, who were already protected by the existing Criminal Law Act 1977
- It is encouraging property speculators and unscrupulous landlords to keep buildings empty
- It is increasing the burden on taxpayers as squatters move into the housing benefit system on top of the prosecution costs
- Despite an overwhelming 96% rejection in the governments consultation, the law was rushed through parliament without sufficient scrutiny and therefore lacks any legitimacy

Against the back-drop of the criminalisation of squatting Made Possible by Squatting is looking for work that depicts or embodies a particular chosen experience, movement, space or place in relation to squatting.

The story you choose to tell could be your own, or a history you want to investigate and share.

It could be current or historic - a huge chapter in the life of a community, or a tiny forgotten moment in time, extraordinary or quite ordinary.

The format is completely open - works can be sculptural, photographic, print based, archive materials, workshops, performance, digital, video, audio, temporary or permanent…

After a brief and undemocratic passage through the Houses of Parliament, Section 144 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill became legislation in September 2012, making living in a squatted residential building a criminal offence in the UK.

Following this, a few politicians are pushing to criminalise squatting in non-residential property, something that wasn’t covered in the first bill.

 We are 75 people living in six blocks of flats in central Brixton who are facing eviction from our homes on July 15th. We live in property that Lambeth Council has not maintained or looked after for the past thirty years. Lambeth council is pushing ahead with its plan to drive more of us out of Brixton, to develop private housing, only affordable for the ultra rich. Now we are being ripped out of our homes to make space for ‘corporate clients’ (see letter below). Foxton’s will charge people upwards of £2000/week to stay in our flats and/or they will sell them for half a million pounds.

 Most of us have lived in the properties for many years, often decades. One person has been here 32 years. Some have families. Lambeth claim they will renovate three buildings as social housing and sell the others. This is a story we have heard before. We have watched them sell off, bit by bit, all properties from previous evictions on Rushcroft Road, Clifton Mansions and a large proportion of Brixton’s original short life housing. They will do the same to these flats. Central Brixton will be gentrified – and those who are already here (like us) be pushed out.
