DON'T BE COMPLACENT - DON'T BE A PC ARMCHAIR ACTIVIST - Crossrail was a well planned SMOKESCREEN - the perfect EXCUSE to redevelop SOHO & swathes of WESTMINSTER - destroying social venues, converting to Up Your Arse Designer Chic Shops - Uber expensive Branded PLC Restaurants - and luxury apartments for Russian Fat Cats & Saudi Princess which will be 80% un-occupied - oh & let's throw in some Boutique Hotels.
Natasha Quarmby 'Where are all the endorsements from the so called celebrity musicians, why is no one there. There must be at least one performer from the past who feels something about this place.'
You have described perfectly what I shared with the courageous occupiers at The 12 Bar earlier today - how many from this high profile list came TODAY a key moment and supported? - it is all too easy for anyone to merely be an 'armchair activist' to sign an on-line petition - to make concerned comments HERE.
To the lead singer from 'Reach for The Stars' well done darling - you sang from the heart, and screamed in self expression the loathing of what is happening - yes the loss of the Astoria - surely the beginning of the end - the destruction of the social and cultural fabric that had made our city the best in the world - Designer Label Shops - PLC coffee shops - Boutique Hotels - Luxury Apartments 'occupied' for 10 % of the year by absent mega rich - this seems to be the reality of what is happening right now - where is the light at the end the Cross ( I am very! ) Rail tunnel? Do I protest too much? - watch this - it will take you to the right segment - the visual blue print is FRIGHTENING - and most disturbing the visual sweep down what will happen to Denmark Street - identikit luxury flats ( QX office 28 Denmark Street 3rd Floor - 'I leave it with you' ) 'we will give favour to musicians' total BULLSHIT - What Rock Star Millionaires? does this represent the majority of the bands that have performed at The 12 Bar? the majority - like the shops barely make a living - We will retain the music shops - how will that work out when you DOUBLE the business rates.
As someone well known on the London 'Gay' scene I felt compelled to give active support - 'Save The 12 Bar' goes way beyond 'well my gay bar is still open' written on the wall within the venue 'Unity Through Diversity' - YES!!!!
All the action groups - all the actors ( http://savesoho.com/ ) - all the music legends that signed the petition - where were you TODAY? ( apologies in advance if any subsequently arrived after I left the peaceful protest ). Signatories of the 'Don't Bin Tin Pan Alley!' petition include: Marc Almond – Soft Cell Mick Avory – The Kinks Chris Blackwell – Founder, Island Records Captain Sensible – The Damned Phil Coulter – Songwriter, Puppet On A String David Essex - Singer Stephanie De Sykes - Singer Steve Diggle – The Buzzcocks Dave Graney – The Moodists Engelbert Humperdinck – Singer Albert Lee – Guitarist, The Everly Bros/ Eric Clapton / Emmylou Harris Glen Matlock – The Sex Pistols Chas McDevitt Stephen Dale Petit Billy Rath – Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers Pete Townshend – The Who Val Weedon MBE – Galaxy Entertainment Geoff Whitehorn – Guitarist, Procol Harum / Family / Elkie Brooks.
