Yesterday Brighton police would have secured a ‘Christmas Spirit’ entry for sure ~ for arresting a disabled man for feeding street homeless people in New Road. Presumably in a bid to ‘clean up the area’ for the seasonal shoppers and theatre-goers in town, plod asked the handful of street homeless ~ and the wheelchair-user who was committing the offence of offering them free food ~to move on. When they refused, the man in question was warned. He pressed the accelerator button on his electric wheelchair and scooted away, ignoring the policeman entirely. When asked to stop and listen, the man refused, saying he was neither obliged to listen nor give any personal details. So faced with a disabled man scooting away, the policeman apparently called for reinforcements (before you could say ‘heavy-handed’ there were three coppers on the scene) and grabbed the man’s keys ~ bringing the mobility aid to a standstill. After a twenty minute stand-off, during which time the man called the copper a ‘bully’ and told passers-by what was going on but refused to give any details to police, he was freed ~ with a warning that any future ‘anti-social’ homeless feeding would be treated as a breach of public order laws. He left, with a companion calling out ‘ACAB’ (the acronym widely used for ‘All Coppers Are Bastards’, but which she explained meant ‘All Cats Are Beautiful’) as they went on their way. (Nice.
