Question Time at the Liberated library Friern Barnet

Hi Supporters of FBCL

This information may be circulated to other supporters.

Interest is building in the series of Any Questions, both at the library and the hustings organised by Barnet Alliance for Public Services. Ours is a fundraising event and we ask for a donation of £5.

The panel for Friday 21 February 7.30pm at the library will be:

Barbara Jacobson in the Chair.
A stalwart of the Save Friern Barnet Library Group, Barbara has more recently gained a reputation as chair of BAPS and FBCL ANY QUESTIONS events.

Poppy
Green candidate for High Barnet Ward of the Council in May 2014, Poppy is well-known for her views and letters on local issues.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman
Labour councillor for Woodhouse Ward, Alan is the Labour spokesman on libraries and culture in Barnet, and happy to listen to and participate in the debate.

Janet Leifer
With the Save Friern Barnet Library Group, Janet – a retired librarian – read stories to children on the Green at the pop-up library outside the closed FB library in the summer of 2012. She now is a leader in the protest by BAPS and the Campaign Against the Destruction of Disabled Support Services against the closure of Age UK Barnet day centres.

Peter Storey
Secretary of Friern Village Residents Association since its inception in 1998, Peter – in conjunction with Harry Gluck and Michael Lunn of  Friern Barnet and Whetstone RA – is active in the contest with Barnet Council over the application for Village Green status of the green next to our library. This is the focus of a decision before the Council Planning and Environment committee on 13 February.

The Conservative Party spokespersons have declined our invitation to join the debate, as they did the first one of BAPS, but are doubtless full of curiosity about the suggestions which will be raised from the floor on these topical issues.
Questions may be submitted in advance to keith.martin18@btinternet.com or asked on the night.
With the library now a registered charity, another burning issue is the attitude of the Council and the library trustees towards our library’s vision and plans for the next eighty years.

Invitations for 21 March have been made to Will Self and Malorie Blackman, the Children’s Laureate.
Acceptances for 11 April have been received from Cllr John Hart of Mill Hill and Hadley Wood author Aubrey Rose.

Best wishes

Keith

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Tor Anonymity Software vs. the National Security Agency - Businessweek:

The Inside Story of Tor, the Best Internet Anonymity Tool the Government Ever Built
Countering Tor is clearly frustrating for the NSA, and Internet users have taken note. Hits to Tor’s download page almost quadrupled last year, to 139 million. “Encryption works,” Bruce Schneier, a cybersecurity expert who helped theGuardian analyze the Snowden documents, said at a talk in New York in January. “That’s the lesson of Tor. The NSA can’t break Tor, and it pisses them off.”

Underground Farm: Michel Roux Jr. Reveals Plans to Supply London With Fresh Produce | EcoWatch

Underground Farm: Michel Roux Jr. Reveals Plans to Supply London With Fresh Produce | EcoWatch: "SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS Underground Farm: Michel Roux Jr. Reveals Plans to Supply London With Fresh Produce Brandon Baker | January 31, 2014 8:45 am | Comments Tweet One hundred feet below the streets of London, a 2.5-acre farm will soon sell fresh veggies grown on a not-so-traditional farm. Dubbing it a “food revolution” underneath your feet, Zero Carbon Food owners Richard Ballard and Steven Dring have teamed up with two-star Michelin chef Michel Roux Jr. to open their Growing Underground farm later this year. Located under the Northern Line near Clapham North tube station, the Growing Underground will offer leafy greens, micro-greens and herbs grown using LED lights and a hydroponics system. “When I first met these guys I thought they were absolutely crazy,” said Roux, who operates Le Gavroche in London and has appeared on Hell’s Kitchen and other shows. “But when I visited the tunnels and sampled the delicious produce they are already growing down there I was blown away. The market for this produce is huge.”"

Homes for all campaign there are 1.5 million empty buildings in the Uk
enought to house the half million homeless and hidden homeless 3 times over.

Repeal sec 144 Laspo act the hated law that criminalises the poor who shelter in empty residential buildings
NB it is still legal to squat non residential spaces ie shops, warehouses, pubs, post offices, factories, libraries etc etc.
We should recycle the empties to create homes, community projects, and employment repairing and renovationg.
This would help to bring rents and over inflated property prices down.

Though the exact number is impossible to determine, an unprecedented  extinction of life on Earth is occurring. Scientists estimate that between 150 and 200 species of life become extinct every 24 hours.
This mass extinction is due, in large measure, to humankind's unsustainable methods of production and consumption, including the destruction of habitats, expanding cities, pollution, deforestation, global warming and the introduction of "invasive species"

Lets start networking the sustainable solutions

It's a benefit £5 Donation towards a new tarp for the Earth Circus/community centre Dome and getting a Solutions show out there/ the new Polytechnic community space.......keep networking for a better future

From time to time we may be able to offer massage or aromatherapy - we'll let you know!

Wherever you're at -
Whether you're new to social change and its emotional see-saws, or you've been at it for years, and whether you're stressing/freaking/burning out, or just want to check in -
- you'll be very welcome.

Who we are
We are a group of activists who are passionate about sustaining activism from the inside out, encouraging a climate of looking after ourselves and each other so that we can keep on the fight for a better world.
We observe that activism is often physically and emotionally exhausting, involves going to boundaries and often beyond them, and can at times feel hopeless, uncomfortable and overwhelming. To be able to carry on doing what we do, we recognise the importance of taking care of our needs, stopping sometimes to rest, finding space for our feelings before they get on top of us, and staying connected with each other and ourselves.
What we do
*On-action support spaces for recovering & re-charging (quiet held spaces for listening, tea, resting, massage etc.)
*“Roaming” support at actions / demos
*Referrals for post-action trauma support (links with Activist Trauma Support, trained counsellors)
*Monthly drop-in space in London: support, networking, idea-gathering
*Facilitating post-action debriefing sessions
*Workshops on sustaining activism
