Last night, along with over two hundred people at 12 Bar in Soho, Frank Turner was an accessory to a crime; and that crime was Rock n Roll. Was it worth getting arrested for? "Fuck yeah."
Stood atop of a pool table in the corner of the occupied Soho venue, screeching and stamping, tonight Turner represents the embers of grassroots music in London. Week by week, we seem to lose another iconic venue in the capital due to re-development, but this is an example of people saying 'enough is enough'. Take away our PA, take away our stage, take away the bar, take away our legal right, but big business in London cannot extinguish that very flame that burns in our culture.
We may have just witnessed to the end of a venue that has been the beginning for so many iconic artists (David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, Adele), but what an end.
