EU parliament votes for embargo on arms sales to Saudi Arabia | World news | The Guardian

MEPs have voted for a European Union-wide arms embargo against Saudi Arabia to protest against the Gulf state’s heavy bombing campaign in Yemen.
The European parliament voted by a large majority for an EU-wide ban on arms sales to the kingdom, citing the “disastrous humanitarian situation” as a result of “Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen”.
The vote does not compel EU member states to act but it does increase pressure on Riyadh, in the wake of criticism from the UN and growing international alarm over civilian casualties in Yemen.
The resolution also turns up the heat on the British government, which has supplied export licences for up to £3bn worth of arms to Saudi Arabia in the last year. The UK has been accused of direct involvement in the bombing campaign through the deployment of UK military personnel to the kingdom.
Saudi Arabia began bombing in Yemen last March to support the Yemeni president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was under threat from Houthi forces aligned with Iran.

Anti Fracking appeal from Greenpeace #olsx #occupy #frackoff #fracking

We have reached a critical moment in our fight against fracking and need your help to continue our work.
As I’m sure you are aware the village of Kirby Misperton in Ryedale, North Yorkshire was the first place approved in the UK for fracking tests to take place, despite overwhelming opposition and the local council receiving over 4,000 objections (1). This could pave the way for fracking not only in North Yorkshire but across the UK, industrialising the countryside.
Now we must act urgently, to make sure David Cameron and other political leaders know that we don’t want or need fracking anywhere. Could you help us by making a regular donation of just £3 a month?
In Scotland also Parliament only narrowly voted in favour of a ban on fracking, with the SNP abstaining from the vote and and failing to commit to a full ban on fracking.
A donation from you will allow us to build a stronger movement and take people’s objections straight to the heart of government, asking for commitments to ensure the UK remains frack free.  We will also investigate fracking companies; exposing their lack of experience, shoddy safety records and dodgy financing, to further discredit this dangerous industry.
With your help we can stand with communities like Ryedale, who are under siege from the powerful fracking industry.
North Yorkshire council received just 36 letters in support of fracking in Ryedale but thousands of objections, and hundreds of thousands more of you have spoken out against fracking all across the UK.
Please help us continue our campaign against fracking by giving a monthly donation towards our work: https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/page/contribute/fracking-push-back-donate
Together we can win.
Thank you for all your support,
Danni Adam
Greenpeace UK
PS Fracking and the search for more fossil fuels to burn will only make climate change worse. The government is going all out for shale while at the same time cutting subsides to the solar industry, undermining our nation’s progress towards the widespread adoption of renewable energy. Please donate so together we can build a cleaner, greener future. https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/page/contribute/fracking-push-back-donate

URGENT APPEAL FROM AWE BURGHFIELD BLOCKADERS It's Sunday morning and were celebrating an amazing week blockading the 'Construction Gate' at Burghfield Nuclear Bomb factory near Reading in Berkshire.#olsx #occupy

IURGENT APPEAL FROM AWE BURGHFIELD BLOCKADERS It's Sunday morning and were celebrating an amazing week blockading the 'Construction Gate' at Burghfield Nuclear Bomb factory near Reading in Berkshire. The camp has resisted all attempt by the MOD to uproot us and we are determined to stay put for the rest of the June month of direct action against Trident. You can help in many ways - visit for the day, bring food and water, you can stay over-night as we have basic communal sleeping and there is room for tents. Contact your local media with the story, info on "Trident Ploughshares" website, network with friends, social media, and peace groups. The gate is on Burnthouse Lane a couple of miles south of Reading, there's a local bus and we're about 15mins walk from Reading Services on the M4. Together we can stop Trident. Northampton Tory run council report claims sleeping rough is simply a ‘lifestyle choice’

Northampton Tory run council report claims sleeping rough is simply a ‘lifestyle choice’

People are choosing to sleep rough as a “lifestyle choice”, a council report has claimed.
Mike Hallet
Mike Hallett has been homeless in Northampton for two years after he was unable to pay bills connected to his accommodation
An investigation by Northampton Borough Council discovered 21 homeless people in the town, including “a significant proportion of European migrants”.
The people were “resolutely refusing to leave the streets”, the report said.
Council officials held talks with 30 organisations to develop a plan to eliminate rough sleeping by June 2017.
Darren Jordan
Darren Jordan thinks some homeless people cannot see a future beyond living on the streets – but hopes he will return to work when an injury clears up
Lithuanian Kristians Olsteins has been rough sleeping in Northampton for about four months after losing his job and passport.
He said it was not a lifestyle choice for him and he would like nothing more than to have a home.
Mike Hallet, who has been homeless for two years, also denied it was a choice.
He said: “Of course, I would like to be off the streets – it is horrible and I would rather be anywhere else.”
Kristians Olsteins
Kristians Olsteins is trying to earn a living through his music and with support from a Lithuanian church
But Darren Jordan, who lived on the streets for two months before finding space in a homeless shelter, believes “some people get stuck in a rut and then it does become a lifestyle choice”.
Northampton Hope Centre runs a day centre supporting people who are homeless or in poverty and was one of the organisations consulted by council officials.
General manager Robin Burgess said: “It’s clear there are people who have become accustomed to life on the street over many years – or even decades.

Police in Papua New Guinea have opened fire on students protesting against Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.
Several students were injured and opposition MPs said four were killed, but the government denied any deaths.
The students were marching from their campus in the capital, Port Moresby, towards parliament where Mr O'Neill faces a possible no confidence motion.
They are demanding that he stand down and answer corruption allegations. Mr O'Neill has denied wrongdoing.

Finland considers basic income to reform welfare system - BBC News

Finns at Pori unemployment centre
Image captionThe unemployment rate in Finland has risen to 10%, slightly above the European Union average
The Finnish government is considering a pilot project that would see the state pay people a basic income regardless of whether they work.
The details of how much the basic income might be and who would be eligible for it are yet to be announced, but already there is widespread interest in how it might work.
Prime Minister Juha Sipila has praised the idea. "For me, a basic income means simplifying the social security system," he said.
The scheme is of particular interest to people without jobs. In Finland, they now number 280,000 - 10% of the workforce.
With unemployment an increasing concern, four out of five Finns now are in favour of a basic income.

Basic income

  • Paid without any need for work
  • Paid irrespective of any income from other sources
  • Additional income subject to income tax
  • Finland to initiate pilot project
  • Dutch city of Utrecht to experiment with basic income this autumn
  • UK Green Party advocated similar "Citizen's Income" at 2015 election

Switzerland 'rejects basic income', poll projections suggest - BBC News

Switzerland 'rejects basic income', poll projections suggest - BBC News

Media captionUnder the plan each citizen would receive an equal monthly payment, regardless of their circumstances
Projections from a referendum in Switzerland suggest voters have rejected a plan to introduce a guaranteed basic income for all.
Some 78% of voters opposed the plan, a GFS projection for Swiss TV suggested.
The proposal had called for adults to be paid an unconditional monthly income, whether they worked or not.
Supporters said since work was increasingly automated, fewer jobs were available for workers. Switzerland is the first country to hold such a vote.
No figure for the basic income had been set, but those behind the proposal suggested a monthly income of 2,500 Swiss francs (£1,755; $2,555) for adults and SFr625 for each child, reflecting the high cost of living in Switzerland. It is not clear how it would affect people on higher salaries.

Image captionSupporters of a basic income last month launched a giant poster campaign
There was little support among Swiss politicians for the idea and not a single parliamentary party has come out in favour, but the proposal gathered more than 100,000 signatures and was therefore put to the vote under the Swiss popular initiative system.
Critics of the measure say that disconnecting the link between work done and money earned would be bad for society.
But Che Wagner from the campaign group Basic Income Switzerland, says it wouldn't be money for nothing.
"In Switzerland over 50% of total work that is done is unpaid. It's care work, it's at home, it's in different communities, so that work would be more valued with a basic income."
