There's a new petition trending on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.

BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky: Include the Green Party in the TV Leaders' Debates ahead of the 2015 General Election.

Robyn Meadwell
London, United Kingdom
It has been announced that the leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage has been invited to join the leaders debates on national TV before next year's general election. However Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, has been excluded from these debates.
UKIP has just gained its first MP; the Greens have had an MP (Caroline Lucas) for 4 years.
The Green Party beat the Liberal Democrats in the 2014 European Elections and is polling neck-and-neck with them in General Election opinion polls. In May 2014 more than 1.2 million people voted Green - more than 150,000 more than voted Liberal Democrat.
Natalie Bennett has just as much a right to be on that panel as the men. Apparently it’s too “messy” to have too many candidates in a TV debate.
By excluding a party with a female leader, we are sending a clear message to the public — politics is still an old boys club.

WHAT OCCUPY DEMOCRACY IS ABOUT DEMAND REAL DEMOCRACY. OCCUPY PARLIAMENT SQUARE. this Fri Oct 17-26th

WHAT OCCUPY DEMOCRACY IS ABOUT

DEMAND REAL DEMOCRACY. OCCUPY PARLIAMENT SQUARE.
Our time is now.
In Hong Kong, hundreds of people are fighting courageously for the right to a real vote. They know that a system where candidates are decided by the state is no democracy.
In Scotland, 45% of people rejected Westminster rule. They know that a system that takes the power to make local decisions out of their hands is no democracy.
We know that democracy is not just about having a vote every four, now five years. It is about having the power to make your voice heard. We know that a government that answers to profit before people is no democracy.
In the UK today, record numbers of people are homeless, record numbers rely on food banks to feed their families, and record numbers face fuel poverty as energy prices rise eight times faster than wages.
At the same time, inequality is back on the rise, making us one of the most unequal countries in the developed world. The amount we ask businesses to contribute to our social services in tax is set to be the lowest of any of the G20 countries. Tax evasion and avoidance costs the UK £95bn a year, enough to fund the NHS in England.
Nobody voted to be made homeless, hungry or unemployed.  It is clear whose voices are being heard.
We need to start a movement for real democracy. The voices of the majority have been ignored for too long. We need to give ourselves the tools to hold our politicians to account, and to end the corporate lobbying power that drowns our voices out.
To do it, we need a movement that cannot be ignored. That is why we are occupying Parliament Square from the 17th – 26th of October, to begin a fight for a real democracy (see the original call to action). There, in the shadow of Nelson Mandela’s statue, we will transform the Square into a civic space where we can re-envision what our society could be like, with talks, workshops, community assemblies, music and theatre.
There is one thing that every successful social justice movement has had to overcome: the prevalence of the belief that the status quo is how it has to be. That there is no alternative. All of us can feel weakened and ground down by that belief, but all of us must have the courage to overcome it. To imagine a different future for ourselves. To show each other that there is an alternative. Because the current system relies entirely on our believing that there isn’t.
The austerity measures imposed on us for the sake of economic growth, our continued reliance on dirty coal and oil, our hospitals closing, our transit systems worsening while fares rise, our children attending under-funded schools with exhausted underpaid teachers – we only accept these things because we let ourselves believe there is no other way of doing things.
But please, join us for the Occupation. Try imagining there is another way. Do it with people you love, people you trust, with experts and activists and people to be inspired by. If you’re reading this, you’re invited. Your friends, family, colleagues are invited. Now is the time to produce our vision of a sane, workable, inspiring alternative, together. Come to learn, discuss and participate. Dare to believe that there is an alternative.
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
Rise, like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you:
Ye are many—they are few!

PROGRAMME

We are putting together a 9 day programme of speakers, workshops and assemblies. Each day will have a different theme.

Friday 17 Oct: Overnight Vigil for the Eradication of Poverty – why do billions still want for food, water and basic medicine?
The occupation starts at 5pm on Friday 17 October with an overnight vigil to mark the UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Speakers at the vigil include: John Hillary (War on Want), Ruth London (Fuel Poverty Action), Keith Hebden (End Hunger Fast), Kofi Mawuli Klu (Pan-African Reparations Coalition in Europe). Plus “speakers corner” including Jamie Kelsey-Fry (New Internationalist).
This will be a candlelit event with speakers and acoustic entertainments where we will stand in solidarity with the victims of the widening wealth inequality that we see in the UK today as a result of our broken democracy. We will also stand in solidarity with the victims of our foreign policy which impoverishes and exploits many parts of the world through economic, diplomatic and military means. We invite members of faith and development groups as well as those of no faith to join us.
Bring a candle in a jam jar and, in case of rain, an umbrella (yellow if possible). As a gesture of solidarity with those suffering homelessness we feel we should not have shelters in the square that night.
Read more about the Friday opening event
Saturday 18 Oct: Why we need a revolution in democracy and what might that look like?
With speakers including Donnachadh McCarthy (former Deputy Chair LiberalDemocrats, author The Prostitute State), David Graeber (Occupy Wall Street, author The Democracy Project), Natalie Bennett (Green Party), Nick Dearden (World Development Movement), John McDonnell MP, George Barda (Occupy London), Richard DeDominici (artist).
Sunday 19 Oct: Money, Tax & Finance – Why the 1% have even more Power & Money than before.
With speakers including Lucy Alright (UK Uncut), Ann Pettifor (New Economics Foundation), John Christensen (Tax Justice Network) and James Medway (New Economics Foundation). Plus: An assembly on the topic of “The 45% plus The 99% – how can we come together to challenge the Westminster elite?”
Monday 20 Oct: Public services 1: Privatisation and the corporate takeover – why they’re murdering the NHS, the welfare state and our public services. With Andy G. (Disabled People Against the Cuts), Dr Louise-Marie Irvine (Save Lewisham Hospital).
Tuesday 21 Oct: Public services 2: Privatisation and ‘trade deals’- how they’re trying to kill democracy before we realise what they’re up to – for good! Education, homes, trade deals.
Wednesday 22 Oct: Life, Environment & Equality – why a revolution in democracy is needed to safeguard our future.
With Speakers including Asad Rehman (Friends of the Earth), Jenny Jones (Green Party), Jeremy Leggett (Solar Century, Carbon Tracker), Jonathan Neale (One Million Climate Jobs) and Mothiur Rahman (Community Chartering Network).
Thursday 23 Oct: Justice, Equality and the Media – why the poor are criminalised and the rich get away with it.
With Hannah Dee (Defend the Right to Protest), Melanie Strickland (Occupy Law) and Nina Owen (Eradicating Ecocide).
Friday 24 Oct: War & Peace – War, what is is good for? Why we need to redefine our national interests and bring an end to resource wars. Featuring Mika Minio-Paluello (Platform) and Dilar Dirik (University of Cambridge).
Saturday 25 Oct: Solutions – what are the answers they don’t want you to know? What would real democracy look like? What would our ideal society look like? Featuring Sarah Allan (Constitutional Convention Campaign), Donnachadh McCarthy (21st Century Great Reform Act) and Josie Long (comedian).
Sunday 26 Oct: Means of change – a better world is nice in theory, but how do we make it happen? We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
A day of assemblies to answer the question: “where do we go from here?”

Criminal Justice Act 20th Anniversary Event coming up at MayDay Rooms (London)

Daily Star, 10 October 1994 (from Datacide archive)
Revolt of the Ravers: The Movement Against the Criminal Justice Act, 1994

Sunday October 19th 2014, 2 pm –  10 pm,  at MayDay Rooms, 88 Fleet Street, London EC4Y 1DH
(Admission free)
Twenty years ago, on 9 October 1994, a huge demonstration against the Government's Criminal Justice Act ended in London's Hyde Park with riotous clashes, police horses charging, and people dancing to sound systems. The Act brought in new police powers against raves, squatters, protestors, travellers and others, and was passed amidst widespread opposition.
This event will include memories of this movement, its ways of organising and representing itself and will feature displays of its ‘material culture’ such as zines, flyers, cassettes and letters.
There will also be a panel discussion looking at the related radical/techno zines of the 1990s, in what was one of the last musical and social movements mediated primarily through print rather than digitally.
The talks and discussion will be followed by an evening of films, music and refreshments.
It is hoped that the day will be a catalyst for a process of archiving, circulating and discussing materials from the radical social/musical movements of the 1990s.

GIVE US SPACE is a feature documentary attempting to explain the complexity of the housing crisis in London. Filmed over 2013-2014, the film focus on housing as a human need and Human Right, interviewing people and following empowering grass-roots movements, self-organized events and housing struggles, while recognizing the vital importance of resistance; squatting empty properties to put them to good purpose and co-operative housing schemes seem essential indicators of alternatives and community building strategies.

Our focus is on people and their strugles as they are affected by the welfare reforms, housing markets and policies, the shortage of affordable and secure housing in London; we followed issues around social housing and gentrification, squatting and housing co-operatives.

We wish to inform, inspire and engage in positive change; share information and generate awareness about the human and social impact of insecure and unaffordable housing. We defend housing as a human need and a Human Right and stand for affordable, secure, decent and sustainable homes for all.

Over the past three weeks, the grassy lawns of Parliament Square have become home to dozens of activists. Despite facing imminent eviction, they have vowed to make their 'democracy village' a permanent fixture in Westminster. One resident gives the Guardian a guided tour

A space for citizenship, a place for people
The purpose of Parliament Square needs to be reconceptualised as a place for the public, a place where the public ‘stake their claim as citizens in rather than visitors to Westminster’. To achieve this, our report recommends developing a new approach to the Square as a ‘space for citizenship‘ as a counterpoint to the key institutions of our democracy which surround it.
Working with Speakers’ Corner Trust, the Hansard Society is promoting this new vision for Parliament Square.
The Square should not be a passive space but a forum for spontaneous and organised citizenship. It should be redesigned to provide a lively forum in which ordinary people as well as great writers, artists and scientists, can engage in public debate about their ideas and opinions. Events could take place in the Square,
including, for example, enactments of important moments in the development of British democracy as well as performances of great political speeches and parliamentary debates. Key events in the country’s democratic history such as the signing of Magna Carta as well as national and international days – for example the International Day of Democracy – should be commemorated
 and celebrated in the Square.
In recent years the concept of the city Square as a place for citizenship has taken on ever greater resonance:
as events in Egypt unfolded, Cairo’s Tahrir Square became the symbolic focus of the ‘Arab Spring’ whilst anger at the impact of the economic crisis on young people found expression in Madrid’s Puerto del Sol Square. At the heart of Westminster we have the opportunity to remodel the concept of the Square as a truly public space for civic engagement and citizenship. In so doing we would send out a powerful statement to the world about what democracy means to us in the 21st century.
But the next few years are vital if anything is to change in Parliament Square. 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the first sitting of Parliament: the eyes of the world will be on Westminster as it marks a global celebration of democracy. These events provide an important window of opportunity that must be exploited urgently if progress in realising this new vision for Parliament Square is to be made.

Impact

Parliament SquareA number of organisations and individuals have expressed support for this new vision for Parliament Square. The Speakers’ Advisory Council on Public Engagement and the Magna Carta 800th Committee have both endorsed it and are actively exploring how they might help it be realised by 2015. RICS and RIBA have both expressed their support, as have cultural leaders and politicians from across the political divide such as the former Lord Speaker, Baroness Helene Hayman, Lord Melvyn Bragg, Lord David Puttnam, and the historians Tristram Hunt MP and Lord Peter Hennessey. Organisations as varied as Article 19, the British Youth Council, Democracy Matters, Involve, London Citizens and NCVO have also lent their support.

[This week] marks the official start of Maryland’s decriminalization law. Under  Senate Bill 364, people can legally carry up to 10 grams of pot without the risk getting arrested and possibly facing jail time. Earlier this year, Democratic Senator Bobby Zirkin sponsored the bill, which reduces the severity of the charge for adults over the age of 18 being caught with marijuana. Shortly after, Governor Martin O’Malley signed the bill decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of cannabis for personal use into law.

http://www.plantconsciousness.com/ conference 4-5th Oct london Regents University Tuke Hall

Our disconnect from the natural world has led to the disastrous situation that we now find ourselves in on planet Earth, yet our deep feelings for nature form part of our spiritual longing. The Plant Consciousness event will demonstrate in dynamic ways, how at both the microcosm and macrocosm levels we can re-establish that connection to nature and why it is essential for the development of consciousness and the well-being of the planet that we do.

We can learn so much from the inherent qualities of the plant kingdom and if we look even closer, from the intelligence that lies behind it. Bringing together the values of plant neurobiology, permaculture, deep-ecology, eco-psychology, shamanism and herbalism you will discover a deeper understanding and a new harmony with plants and with your place in the biosphere of life on this planet.
