We’re not sure how it happened but it did, and there seems to still be need for ASS, or something like it.
As part of our celebrations, we are planning a day of reminiscing, planning and partying, on the 12th September. Not a particularly momentous date as far as we know – the decision to start was around February and the actual opening was in October.
We currently plan for an afternoon of reminiscing and planning, followed by an evening of partying and networking. Current plans are for a daytime gathering at Brass Tacks, 300 Brixton Hill, SW2 1HT with the evening session nearby.
We’ll start at 12 with nibbles and chat, then an hour of reminiscing from those who were around at the start, and then later generations. Following this we need to talk about how much harder things have got and where we go from here. We might break up into smaller groups to talk about bailiffs, campaigning, archiving, other aspects of support (ideas welcome). There will be a crèche space but we might have to call for support. Input still welcome.
ASS is not the only show in town, so we’ll try to make space for the many inspiring current campaigns and struggles. There will be space for stalls
For the evening there will be music and dancing and chatting and whatever you want to make of the space.

On Saturday 12th Sept, take part in a big day of action to challenge the arms fair on the weekend before the arms fair begins.
This fun and accessible action will be the culmination of a week of action in the run up to the arms fair to make it as difficult as possible for it to go ahead. Exhibition equipment and military hardware will be rolling (or sailing) into ExCeL – let’s stop it getting to its destination!

In preparation for the action we are asking people to meet up at Canary Wharf station where there will be a Stop The Arms Fair bus with details of what to do next. We will be offering a free delicious Vegan breakfast between 9am and 11am after which we will move all together to the death fair where the mass action will take place.
The action will divide into two streams, the first will be a fluffy action for those not happy to be arrested or to be confrontational with cops. The second will be a direct but non-violent action that will confront the show and is intended to delay the set up and even cause the show to open late. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has condemned the organisers of demonstrations in Kuala Lumpur calling for his resignation as "haram," during his annual address on the eve of Independence Day.

During the August recess GOP senators were told to press for the passage of the TPP Trade Agreement. Yikes!!
Wikileaks has gotten their hands on a copy of Obama’s phony TPP trade bill. It contains 29 chapters but only 5 pertain to trade. Wikileaks will be publishing the entire bill and they have already released the chapter on Investment. It’s very interesting. It is written in a such a way as to give multinational companies a huge advantage on trade. If a public hospital is built close to a private one, the private hospital has the right to sue the country for expected losses. That is outrageous. The agreement also regulates the internet and requires internet companies to gather certain data which they will be required to share with certain private companies. Many of the provisions will not only be secret before the vote in the House, but will also be kept secret for four years after the bill is signed. That means we won’t know what’s in it even after it’s passed.
According to the TPP, the United States will have to give up sovereignty on labor, immigration and the environment. The Sultan of Brunei that has just 417k subjects will have the same amount of clout as the president of the United States that has 320 million people. In fact, of the eleven countries in the TPP, an amendment can be added to the agreement with six countries and a total population of 82 million could defeat the other five countries with a total population of over 633 million.
The Investment Chapter highlights the intent of the TPP negotiating parties, led by the United States, to increase the power of global corporations by creating a supra-national court, or tribunal, where foreign firms can “sue” states and obtain taxpayer compensation for “expected future profits”. These investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) tribunals are designed to overrule the national court systems. ISDS tribunals introduce a mechanism by which multinational corporations can force governments to pay compensation if the tribunal states that a country’s laws or policies affect the company’s claimed future profits. In return, states hope that multinationals will invest more. Similar mechanisms have already been used. For example, US tobacco company Phillip Morris used one such tribunal to sue Australia (June 2011 – ongoing) for mandating plain packaging of tobacco products on public health grounds; and by the oil giant Chevron against Ecuador in an attempt to evade a multi-billion-dollar compensation ruling for polluting the environment. The threat of future lawsuits chilled environmental and other legislation in Canada after it was sued by pesticide companies in 2008/9. ISDS tribunals are often held in secret, have no appeal mechanism, do not subordinate themselves to human rights laws or the public interest, and have few means by which other affected parties can make representations.

COMMUNITY HOUSE FACING EVICTION
Thursday began with an early start, prepping for and heading to the courts in Finchley Central in the rain. Our five-month old community occupation was up against a possession order. We knew there was precious little legal defence for our presence in the house, since most judges don’t seem as impressed as us that we have used our occupation to reinforce a powerful community in the face of deliberate attempts to destroy it, but we had to give it a go.
Unsurprisingly, we lost. Quickly. And the judge accepted the claimant’s assertion that High Court (not County Court) bailiffs would be required to remove us, since, according to the claimant’s barrister, ‘no county court bailiffs will touch Sweets Way with a barge pole.’ This comment was probably the only silver lining of a pretty bleak morning, and seems to be an indication that we’re doing something right. We assume all the county court bailiffs in London are taking a principled stand in solidarity with our struggle for housing justice by refusing to evict us.
WE SHUT DOWN BARNET HOMES!
From the courts, we went to Barnet Homes to protest the treatment Mostafa and his family have faced, and to make a series of demands that Barnet Homes needs to meet immediately to address the family’s needs. We shut down the building, at both entrances at several points over a two or three hour period, making crystal clear that if they continue to fail Mostafa and so many others, we will continue to make business-as-usual impossible for them.
MOSTAFA’S TEMPORARY COURTROOM VICTORY
Then, just as we were leaving, we heard from Mostafa, who had spent the morning at the Royal Courts of Justice, applying for a stay of execution on Barnet Council’s decision to allow High Court bailiffs to evict him without offering a time and date. What we all thought would have been a bureaucratic formality, turned out to be a major victory for the family and the campaign. Mostafa saw a judge, who was able to see Barnet’s utter lack of sensitivity over his needs as a person with disabilities and made clear that the Council would need to immediately cease any pending High Court bailiff actions and find a date to have a full and proper hearing to justify why they think they needed to do so in the first place.
This means that there will be at least weeks, possibly months, before the family have to leave their home, if Barnet continues to fail to offer them a suitable alternative. It also mean Mostafa will finally get a day in court to explain why he feels a High Court bailiff eviction is entirely unfair and disproportionate to the situation, after the decision to use High Court bailiffs against him was taken in secret, without his knowledge.
For once in the campaign, the justice system actually ruled on the side of justice! We won’t get too used to this, but it certainly helped balance out the legal ruling against our community home.
WE NEED REINFORCEMENTS
For the immediate future, we need people who are able to come stay the night at 76 Oakleigh Road North, to be able to help defend this crucial pocket of community strength we’ve held onto since Annington began evicting families from the estate.

The housing crisis in England and Wales has continued to deteriorate since 2011, as exemplified by the ever increasing evictions, displacement and homelessness. The three years to 2012/13 saw an expansion of 27% in the total number of local authority assessment decisions for statutory homelessness, growing from 89,000 in 2009/10 to 113,000 in 2012/13, while households ‘accepted as homeless’ rose by 34%, from 40,000 to 52,000. Statutory homelessness in London has risen by 80% since 2009/10 and homeless placements in temporary accommodation have increased nationally by 24%.[1]
In the private rented sector, the ending of Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST) has seen a sharp rise in evictions, producing 30% of all statutory homelessness acceptances in the first quarter of 2014/15. Social-renting tenants are being subjected to policies of dispersal and displacement, with 64% of the 38,000 tenant households who lost their home in 2014 being as a result of possession claims from councils and housing associations. Crisis has raised concerns about the “growing ‘business’ orientation of some housing associations, coupled with reductions in benefit entitlements, […] curtailing low income households’ access to social tenancies”. In 2013/14 numbers of people seen sleeping rough in London was up 64% since 2010/11 (from around 4,000 to 6,500), with the 2013 national total up 37% on its 2010 level. Rough sleepers of European origin have risen by 79%, as compared with the 56% increase in UK-origin counterparts, in part due to reductions in welfare benefits to Central and Eastern European (CEE) migrants.[2]
Those most affected by the changes to the welfare system, rising rents and homelessness are the young. Often referred to as “Generation Rent,” adults aged 21 to 38 years, who have not been able to get on the property ladder, now find themselves locked in to a future of ever-spiralling rents and diminishing social security. Changes to the Shared Accommodation Rate have reduced access to the private rented sector for 25-34 year-olds, while Citizens Advice caseload evidence shows a substantial rise in youth homelessness, with the number of 17-24 year-olds seeking help with housing up by 57% between 2007/08 and 2012/13[3]. Homeless Link shows the 70% of service users at accommodation projects in England were men, and 53% Young People (16-24)[4]. Homeless charity Crisis has shown that squatting is a common response to homelessness: their report, “Squatting: a Homelessness Issue,”[5] demonstrates that 40% of single homeless people squat “as a direct response to homelessness”. With nearly one million buildings standing empty across the UK, of which 200,000 are long-term empty[6], with property speculation and foreign investment fuelling upward rental and purchase prices, squatting is the only alternative to street homelessness for increasing numbers.

The trial of citizen journalist Ben Kidd, who was arrested while livestreaming [1] from Runnymede eco-village’s “Festival of Democracy”, collapsed in Staines Magistrates court on Monday 24th August.

On Friday 12th June, the police had drafted officers in from seven different forces around southern England.
The police claimed that the festival, which included workshops and speakers on a range of pro-democracy topics, was, in fact an ‘illegal rave’. Festival organisers believe the move was designed to prevent residents of the eco-village hosting an alternative celebration of the 800th sealing of the Magna Carta
The festival had been organised by Diggers2012 and Occupy Democracy.
Runnymede eco-village is situated 500 metres from where the Queen and Prime Minister Dave Cameron were taking part in the official celebrations.
Police enforced Section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (1994) to prevent people from attending the festival [2]. This piece of legislation explicitly defines illegal activity and powers in relation to music “characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats”.
At the time, Surrey Police force said:
“The force will not tolerate unregulated, unlicensed events… officers will direct people preparing, gathering or waiting for the rave to leave the land. In addition the act gives police powers to seize property in relation to an event.”
This gave the police an excuse to routinely deny members of the public access to a series of discussions and talks relating to democracy and the contemporary relevance of the Magna Carta. Speakers included OpenDemocracy founder Anthony Barnett and Guy Standing a professor at SOAS and the author of A Precariat Charter.
Kidd was stopped by police after approaching the village and given a dispersal order, stating that he must travel 5 miles from the site. He was later arrested while livestreaming after police accused him of ignoring the order.
In court the prosecutor began by expressing his dismay that the case had even come to court. Kidd was acquitted when the magistrate accepted that police had not given the dispersal order correctly.
Former Liberal Democrat deputy chair Donnachadh McCarthy, a supporter of Occupy Democracy wrote in The Ecologist at the time of the Festival [3]:
“Surrey Police chiefs disgracefully abused their powers and declared the democracy festival to be a “rave”, a claim faithfully relayed by the BBC along with police claims that they were “committed to ensuring the safety of the public”, acting only “to prevent any disturbance, disruption or distress to the local community”, and concerned about”increased crime”.
He continued:
“Both those arbitrary arrests, and the threatened seizure of the property of those attending the Festival – another power accorded by Section 63 – run completely against the guarantees of the Magna Carta itself: an irony no doubt lost on Surrey Police and their political masters.”
This trial is the latest in a succession of failed attempts to prosecute pro-democracy activists by the Crown Prosecution Service. So far, a string of trials following Occupy Democracy protests in London have collapsed or resulted in acquitals.

Sunbirds funeral Glastonbury photos a warrior of the Rainbow brother ofour tribe passes to the other worlds
Sunbird who came to join the tribe at the One world Rainbow Centre The squatted St. John the Baptist church in Kentish Town where Rainbow Tribe gathered 1993-96.
Has sadly passed on to the other worlds, to the summer lands as our Celtic ancestors called it.
He was an inspiration to many a generation creating gatherings parties and festivals enjoyed by many hundreds of thousands of people.

He passed away in a road accident travelling between Switzerland and Italian festivals doing the work he loved. In death as in life he brought us all together, a massive tribe of well wishers gathered to celebrate his life in the church of Saint John the Baptist Glastonbury.
Psy trance played and the four directions were honoured inside the church. There was then a procession to the white spring where a water ceremony was conducted for this man, a water wizard who shared the water of the worlds with many.
A large procession then headed up Glastonbury Tor to circle around the tor with the Dragon, followed by a large circle when where many people spoke of his great works and how he inspired so many people.
It was a very moving ceremony he will be missed, but in his passing, he is asking us all to step up to share our gifts, to create gatherings and celebrations for the earth.
His Earth heart cafe was at the heart of many festivals over the last two decades travelling across Europe and the world. The day ended with a full on tribal gathering in the King Arthur pub Glastonbury.Where many tribe met moot and celebrated his life.
Fly free brother Sunbird your life touched many and inspired much action.
Death is only a doorway ,the ancient Celts did not fear death as they knew we lead many lives in many incarnations,death is the beginning of the next great adventure.

The Eco village was taken to court after 3 years of occupation on June 15th the exact 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta being sealed.
The Judge on the day addressed and ruled on some of our arguments on licence and ECHR European court of Human rights.
However he very strangely did not even address or make any ruling on our arguments under the Magna Carta, Forest charter and Common Law.
This was most strange that on the exact 800th anniversary day, while the Queen and world leaders gathered to celebrate the whats left of the Magna Carta, the Judge did not even mention the words "Magna Carta".Its even as if he was warned not to mention it in any ruling.
Let alone address our arguments under Magna Carta article 39 , rights to a fair Trial being removed by our governments support for extraordinary rendition,the secret prison complex.
The removal of our Legal Aid and how this has affected Habeous Corpus and rights to a fair trial.
Our rights to seek redress by occupation of crown/government land and buildings from article 61 of the Magna Carta.
That these rights were granted in perpetuity ( perpetual/for ever)
that the sovereignty of the people has been gradually removed and wittled away,with ever increasing draconian laws.
The judge did not address our rights under the Forest Charter,rights to sustain ourselves from the wasteland and woodland,which at Runnymede we have occupied for over 3 years.
And finally the Judge completely ignored and failed to address in his ruling Mr. Hampsons arguments on common law.Our rights to share the common wealth of the earth.
It is for these reasons that we were given leave to appeal at the High court.
The Runnymede Festival for democracy was heavily suppressed by the police and authorities, sending Police from 7 counties forces,to surround the village and deny access to hundreds of people and guest speakers on the Magna Carta and emissaries from countries as far away as Kurdistan.
Despite this many hundreds made it into the event under over or through the fences.Never give up keep struggling and striving for a better world.
A call was put out from the Runnymede Festival for Democracy from the eco villagers,Occupy Democracy/Occupy london,The Putney debates,Assemblies for Democracy,Open democracy,Members of the Peoples assembly and Radical assembly and Brick lane debates for a Citizen led Constitutional Convention,similar to that created by the people of Iceland.

Coral reefs are the most biologically diverse marine habitats in the world. As well as providing vital protection against storm damage and coastal erosion, millions of people rely on reefs for food.
Yet years of unsustainable fishing practices, pollution and rising sea temperatures means that up to one-fifth of all coral reefs around the world have already been destroyed. So the battle is on to safeguard their future.
Dr Mary Hagedorn of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute has been on a global mission to create a seed bank to protect the world's highly-threatened coral biodiversity. Using technology and techniques similar to those used in human sperm banks, Hagedorn and her colleagues were the first on the planet to cryogenically freeze the sperm and stem cells of coral.
Russell Beard travels to Oahu, Hawaii, to join Dr Hagedorn's team on a spawn gathering trip to gather and freeze endangered coral sperm and cells for future use.
