Polluters are "hijacking our democracy," according to retired military general who took control of Hurricane Katrina emergency relief efforts in 2005
NEW ORLEANS - Who would have thought that a retired military general would deliver the most outspoken remarks on behalf of nature and the news media during the opening reception of the world's largest annual gathering of environmental journalists?
Retired Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore was widely hailed by the media in 2005 as the "Category 5 General" who came in and took control of sluggish, disjointed Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in New Orleans that summer after a series of blunders by other members of the former Bush administration, as well as the state of Louisiana.
On Wednesday night, Lieutenant General Honore - a plain-talkin' Louisiana native - took control of the audience at theSociety of Environmental Journalists (www.sej.org) national conference in New Orleans with phrases such as this one that were targeted at the oil and chemical industry: "They're hijacking our democracy."
