Angry protesters chain themselves to bookshelves in last ditch attempt to save library Wales

Phoenix says "occupy all the libraries threatened with closure, what kind of government steals books from future generations."

Protesters chained themselves to bookshelves for around four hours in a last ditch attempt to save their local library.

Police were called after a group of campaigners chained themselves up at Rhydyfelin Library, near Pontypridd, as it officially closed its doors on Saturday afternoon.

The library closure is one of 14 made by Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council as the authority tries to save £70m over the next four years.

At 1.30pm on Saturday everyone was asked to leave the library as it closed its doors for the last time.

But the campaigners refused and staged a peaceful protest until police arrived at around 5.30pm.

There is due to be a judicial review at Newport Crown Court on Thursday this week as campaigners continue their fight to keep the library open.

Sian Perkins was one of those who chained herself to a bookshelf at the protest.

She said: "I think it's about time the RCT sat up and listened to the community.

"We've had fantastic response and their arguments about geographical spread are nonsense because people from Taffs Well and Nantgarw as well as here are now expected to travel to Pontypridd."

Fellow campaigner Anne Smith said: "This library is the hub of this community, the only council run library from the outskirts of Whitchurch to Pontypridd.

"You could travel a few miles to Llantrisant which is a big inconvenience, but this is a deprived area people aren't privileged to own a car in some cases" n the wings.
