Parliament square the Battle for the heart of British Democracy, some phoenix advice #olsx @occupynn #bohemians4soho #occupydemocracy
This Saturday at Parliament square saw a number of people arrested for merely trying to have democratic discussion.
After a few months of fencing off the square, attacking and arresting those at the protest .It seems like last month that the authorities had allowed the democratic debate to happen on the grass in an unfenced square.
Possibly due to A strong JUDICIAL REVIEW against their heavy suppress and arrest/fence off tactics.
However this weekend the forces of corporatocracy were back to their old anti democratic tricks.
Arresting people, snatch squading them into waiting bully vans.
Being an activist of nearly 25 years now and seeing the last few months tactics, i was not surprised at all.
We have grown used to the Tory Tyrrany's Totalitarian Tactics.
However a friend of mine who came with us from Reclaim Love at piccadilly square, was absolutely appalled, astounded and shocked as the police and heritage wardens pushed their way around the field arresting people, without fair warning or explanation of the laws they were using.
Some advice from the old school protest team
THE KEY QUESTION TO ASK IS....what law are u using is it a bye law or a normal law, and how does that law actually apply to what we are doing NOW,or does it apply at all.
Always find out the name of the senior policeman on the field. always record with cameras and note pad what is said, what law is being used, what time things happened and get this info to legal observers .
and follow it up, look up the laws online as they quote them, and challenge its exact interpretation.
The heritage wardens have the power to ask you to leave if u have broken one of the 30 bye laws, and then demand name and address.but if you have not broken one they cannot ask you to leave.or ask for name and address.
IF U HAVE BROKEN A BYE LAW, they can ask for your name and address,if u refuse to give name and address that gives the power of general arrest to the police.
so if you give them some name and address, thats means they have NO power to ARREST.
The name and address you have given will be sent a letter to summon u to court for breaking a bye law, a small fine ,not a criminal record.
Its handy to not carry I.D> on these demos.if u get me.
As long as u have no sleeping equipment or tents they can't use the Police and social responsibility Act PSRA ? law on that one.the one to stop camping and equipment.
The police,in previous months,at OCCUPY DEMOCRACY when challenged directly have changed from laws to bye laws and back again. trying to find a law to frame us in.
Bindmans solicitors say that the police seem rather confused as to which law they are using.
Keep saying to them that there is a Judicial Review under way, by Liberty, they are being recorded on national, international media and livestream,
What they are being asked to do is, unlawfully and undemocratically suppressing our rights to assemble ,protest and democratically discuss,in a place that was created (parly sq) so that the British public could make their views known to the passing MPs and political establishment.
we have rights under European ECHR rights articles 10 and 11 to assemble and protest.
The police tried to claim trespass on saturday, but who in the GLA decides which of the public is trespassing in this public square.
its claimed GLA owns it ,but in fact they only look after it for the people.
It is an ancient site (TOT HILL,under westminster abbey) where the ancient celts in Druidic times gather to discuss, debate and make the lores (which became Laws later) We say it is COMMON LAND
The police said we should ask written permission to protest,we reminded them that in Russia and China people have to apply in writing to protest,in this country we have rights.
On previous occasions some of Occupy Democracy have checked out the so called Legal route of applying for permission, to find out you need to get £1,500 public ;liability insurance to have a public demonstration.PROTEST for the RICH or large well organised/funded groups only???
They say u need to apply in writing to display any written material or banners.
WHERE HAS THE DEMOCRACY AND FREE SPEECH GONE?
Know your rights, stand firm (sometimes) keep moving around fast sometimes, keep on your toes innit, and swarm back together to carry on the direct democratic debating that is our inalienable birthright as free born people of this country ,that has a long and proud tradition of struggle to uphold our rights and freedoms,

phoenix tactical tips for next Occupy democracy March 7th.
We need to work on more legal shielding ,rather than ringing bindmans when it goes off, maybe Gavin from bindmans who is sent in emergency can be there during the whole thing. Can we put a call out for other solicitors,as they are stronger legal shield ,than the excellent Legal observers we already have.
Also more work to bring in media shield coverage, national and international film crews to shame the governments, blatant political policing.
And Bomber Boris' GLA free speech clamp down.
WHO is it in the GLA that decides that democratic discussion is trespassing, the police could not tell us we need to know who the decision maker is,is it Boris or some mid level GLA manager who determines which groups can and can't have discussion and debate in the heart of our so called democracy (corporatocracy)
Possibly some more direct action training, for if when the police come in,linking arms ,sitting down, arm tubes, locking on to each other ???
also would like to observe that we need to sometimes keep moving ,when a heritage warden approaches you the best tactic is to ignore and move away from him fast.
The heading away from wardens and police fast has helped avoid arrest a number of times.
Then obviously returning back to the discussion.
would also like to share a tactic from the school kids in parly sq when the iraq war started, as soon as the police got 2 sides on a kettle ,some one would shout, change the scenery and the kids would get up and run around in all directions very fast. Totally frustrating the police attempts to contain them.Imaginethe police trying to catch many fleet footed school kids in the playground of parliament.
We need to sometimes move around very fast in different directions and then "swarm"
back together to continue democratic discussion.
Just some ideas folks, keep networking viva the resistance and lets all pump the networking machine for March 7th and make it the largest Occupy Democracy ever.
Lets get those stickers up in all the tube/bus stations across london.

DEMOCRACY "ARRESTED" OUTSIDE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT. Outrageous scenes as Police and Boris Johnsons security heavy handedly suppress democratic debate #olsx @occupynn #Bohemians4soho

DEMOCRACY "ARRESTED" OUTSIDE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT
- Protestor holding a coffin branded "UK Democracy R.I.P." arrested on Parliament Square
- Despite Judicial Review police disrupt peaceful pro-democracy protests under the cover of darkness
- Freedom of the press threatened as NUJ members threatened with arrest and five arrestees include independent livestreamer
Under the cover of darkness the Metropolitan police's Territorial Support Group (TSG) officers, on instruction from GLA Wardens, disrupted Occupy Democracy's monthly protest in front of the Houses of Parliament. This is despite London Mayor Boris Johnson and the GLA being under Judicial Review for their erection of fences in October, November and December.
Around 200 Occupy Democracy supporters were threatened with arrest and five arrests were subsequently made in which large numbers of police targeted and, sometimes violently, picked off peaceful protesters.
These arrests interrupted what was otherwise a packed programme of speakers, workshops, discussions, entertainment and a moving ceremony marking the death of UK's democracy. The focus of the programme was on highlighting failures in equality and representation with regard to gender, race, class and ability with speakers from groups including Sisters Uncut, 50:50 Parliament, Women Against the Cuts and the Shaker Aamer Campaign.
Arrestees include the whistle-blowing former Liberal Democrat vice Chair Donnachadh McCarthy (holding coffin in picture) - who has now been arrested four times at Occupy Democracy protests - and popular citizen journalist "Obi" whose arrest raises worrying questions about restrictions on free speech. Lawyers have told us that some or all of the arrests are likely to be unlawful.
Former Deputy Mayor Baroness Jones of of Moulsecoomb who chairs the GLA's Police and Crime Committee condemned the disproportionate and unnceccessary policing operation: "I'm horrified at the rather nasty policing of the latest Occupy protest. The police need reminding that it's their job to facilitate peaceful protest, not suppress it."
Donnachadh McCarthy's arrest happened as he held a coffin symbolising the death of UK democracy. The coffin carried the inscription "UK Democracy R.I.P. Killed by corporate billionaires." McCarthy said: "It's outrageous that so many peaceful protestors are being arrested whilst Boris Johnson entertains the real criminals - making hundreds of thousands of pounds working for the tax dodging Barclay brothers at The Telegraph."
Popular citizen journalist "Obi" said: "It's hugely disappointeing that Boris' private security forces would arrest a citizen journalist in their ongoing attempt to prevent freedom of speech."
Sam Keyes of Women Against The Cuts who was one of a number of speakers that addressed the impacts of the under-representation of women in parliament, said:
"The current democratic system in the UK is so deeply entrenched in neoliberal and white patriarchal ideology that it simply doesn't work for women. They are disproportionately affected across every spectrum: education, legal, health - to name just a few - as both service providers, employees and services users. For example, 83% of cuts made by this current government have come directly out of the pockets of women."
Occupy London legal advisor Matthew Varnham said: "Last month's Occupy Democracy protest was facilitated on the grass of the Square. This change of approach was a welcome development following previous months where the Square has been closed. Unfortunately the GLA have now backtracked and last night's arrests demonstrate an inflexibility on behalf of the GLA to continue to facilitate such protest. This is particularly problematic as we now know the GLA's repair schedule will likely see the grass area closed until "late spring," so after the general election." [1]
Occupy Democracy is a social movement for democracy free from corporate control that works for people and planet. Our draft demands include:
- a citizen-led constitutional convention
- the introduction of proportional representation so that everybody's vote counts
- reform of funding of political parties to stop corporations and lobbyists having so much influence over election campaigns
- severing the ties between politicians and corporations (by not allowing MPs to have second jobs, ending corporate secondment, closing the "revolving door" between government and corporations and cleaning up corporate lobbying)
The March occupation of Parliament Square will take place on Saturday, March 7th with the theme of Climate Change and the Environment, to coincide with the Time to Act march and rally.

Notes:
How representative is UK democracy?
Statistics showing a dire discrepancy between those within parliament and the population they are supposed to represent:
- Only 22% of the House of Commons are women [2]
- Only 4% are from ethnic minorities [3]
- 62% of the total are white men aged over 40 [4]
- Over 33% attended private schools (including 20 Old Etonians) compared to 7% of the population as a whole [5]
- MPs earn at least £67,000 before expenses and second jobs are taken into account, putting them immediately in the top 5% of wage earners in this country [5]
It is clear that MPs are a priveleged elite rather than a cross-section of ordinary people. Therefore they have no understanding of the pain and misery their policies inflict on the population in general, and our poor and vulnerable in particular. Furthermore, parliamentarians often have a direct financial interest in supporting policies that are against the public interest.
For example:
- A third of MPs are buy-to-rent landlords [6]
- 206 parliamentarians have recent or present financial private healthcare connections and 142 Lords have recent or present financial connections to companies involved in private healthcare [7]
- 27 of the 59 wealthiest hedge fund managers have donated more than £19 million to the Conservative Party [8]
- 46% of the top 50 traded companies in the UK have a British parliamentarian as either a director or shareholder - six times the Western European average [9]
It's no wonder that over 50% of Britons think MPs put their own interests first, that 72% don't trust them to tell the truth and 65% think that at least half of MPs use their power for personal gain [10].

These works are again weather dependent as the ground needs to be completely dry. Following this work there also needs to be a ‘rest’ period for the lawn, which is free of activities for the seeds to mature.''
