In the Shadow of the Magna Carta BBC news website today come to Runnymede for the festival for Democracy June 12-15 #olsx #onn #radicalassembly #occupydemocracy

In the shadow of Magna Carta

Eco village

The 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta by King John at Runnymede, on the banks of the Thames, is on Monday, 15 June. Today, the site, between Windsor and Staines, is part of the National Trust - but bordering it, a group have set up what they call Runnymede Eco-Village.

The small community is based in woodland earmarked for housing, and eviction notices have been served. They call themselves Diggers, after a group of land activists who occupied St George's Hill in 1649.

Photographer Daniella Zalcman stumbled upon the group in February this year, and, after a few phone calls, began to visit every week or so.

Cooking at the campsite

Zalcman was made welcome very quickly. "I was lucky to get to know most of the villagers before they were served an eviction notice at the end of March, when local journalists began to descend on the place en masse," she says.

"I've slept there, I've eaten there, I've helped to do the dishes and take out the garbage. So I think my access and my relationship with the group is a little different and a little more intimate."

That is something that really comes across in the work. Zalcman's pictures invite the viewer into the community. The soft, shallow depth of field produced by the Yashica D TLR she uses for much of her work helps in that respect.

"It's been pretty amazing to watch the forest transition from winter to summer," she says.

"In April, the entire hill was coated in bluebells. Now, the terraced permaculture space in the centre of the village is full of vegetables and greens."

Sign on the fence that surrounds the community

The community consists of those who have been on site for a number of years and others who drift in and out.

Magna Carta outlined some basic human rights, including a fair trial and limits on taxation - the principle being that no-one was above the law, including the King, and it is seen as the birth of our modern democracy.

Ieuan Davies, a resident from the beginning of the community, says: "I'm unemployed, and I've reached a point in my life where I need a sabbatical from everything.

"I worked for 20 years as a violin restorer, but I want something different now.

"I want to live with fresh air, and I want to be free.

"I'm doing this because I can.

"We just want fairness and freedom.

"People want us living in boxes, working jobs, paying taxes.

"We're not doing any of that. We'll be here for the celebration of Magna Carta, freedom under law. That's ironic, isn't it?

"I don't use money much. I eat food that's been thrown out [in supermarket bins], and I can survive for weeks without money. I've achieved a stress-free life."

The date for the court hearing to settle eviction is set for 15 June at Guildford County Court., the same day that the Queen and other dignitaries will be celebrating the anniversary of Magna Carta, a short distance from the village.

Here are a selection of Zalcman's pictures from her series entitled To Make a Wasteland Grow.

Vinny has been at the site for nearly three years, he says: "I see this as an opportunity to have a voice. I personally don't think we can beat the system, but it's created an opportunity to open a discussion of land rights. We've become the guardians of this land for a few years - we pick up people who have slipped through the net and give them refuge. Everyone fits in here. We have freedom, yes, but we govern ourselves"

PRESS RELEASE: Runnymede Eco-villagers get court date for same day Queen arrives for Magna Carta celebrations #onn #olsx #radicalassembly #occupydemocracy #nhs #austerity #democracy

Runnymede Eco-villagers get court date for same day Queen arrives for Magna Carta celebrations

  • Villagers hold "Festival for Democracy" to explore how the UK citizens can write a Magna Carta for the 21st century
  • Villagers question suspicious timing of court date
  • Festival Programme announced

Runnymede Eco-villagers court date is same day as Queen arrives for Magna Carta celebrations

Villagers from Runnymede Eco-village [1] have been served notice for a court hearing in procedings to evict them for the same date that the Queen arrives in Runnymede to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta [2]. The Queen will arrive on Monday 15th June and will be just a few hundred yards from the settlement of self-built homes in Coopers Hill Coppice.

Defendent Phoenix Rainbow said:

"The Magna Carta is a universal symbol of individual freedom against the arbitrary power of the state. Yet it appears that the state is conspiring once again with rich landowners to remove ordinary people who have chosen to live in common on the land. Magna Carta's companion "Charter of the Forest" gave rights to commoners to subsist on the land. While they will pretend to celebrate the Magna Carta this weekend they will actually be acting in direct contradiction to its very spirit."

Residents at the Eco-village have taken inspiration from the Diggers who in 1649 went to set up a communal village on the land. They too were evicted by rich landlords.

The plaintiffs in the case are Orchid Runnymede Limited but it seems the site is being developed by luxury property developers Art Estates, part of the Royalton Group. According to their website the development will provide "grand living" at "an aspirational address" and will be "set in 67 acres of beautiful parkland ... with close proximity to Windsor Great Park [and] Royal Ascot" [3].

The court hearing is set for Monday 15th at 10:30am at Guildford County Court. This is the same day the Queen will unveil a statue of hereself as the culmination of the official Magna Carta celebrations [4].

Villagers naturally think the timing is suspicious. Are the authorities attempting to draw people away from the village at a time when the Queen will be a few hundred yards away?

At the previous court hearing on 9 April Judge Kubiak ruled in their favour by saying: “It appears to me that there is some arrangement in place in some shape or form to occupy this land” [5].

Phoenix Rainbow said:

"We demand the right to subsist on waste ground as the Charter of the Forest provided for."

"Festival for Democracy" to explore how UK citizens can write a Magna Carta for the 21st century

The Runnymede eco-village community in partnership with supporters of Occupy Democracy [6] and The New Putney Debates [7] have organised a "Festival for Democracy" [8] as an alternative to the official Magna Carta 800th anniversary celebrations.

As well as serving as the community's annual festival the event will explore how citizens can write their own Magna Carta (or constitution) that is fit for the 21st century.

At the same time as celebrating the sealing of the Magna Carta 800 years ago David Cameron wants to roll back UK democracy by scrapping the Human Rights Act [9]; giving the state increased powers to snoop on its cirtizens [10]; criminalising certain types of political belief and action [11]; and handing more of our democracy over to corporations by signing the secretive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership [12].

Anthony Barnett, founder of OpenDemocracy and author of This Time: Our Constitutional Revolution will be speaking at the event. He said:

"The official celebration of the Magna Carta is designed to make it into a harmless ‘designer event’. But it stands as a rebuke to arbitrary power as judicial review is under attack; as a call for access to the law for all as legal aid is decimated; and as an inspiration to write down our constitution."

The Charter of the Forest allowed people to subsist in the commons which can be seen as providing protection equivalent of today's welfare state. The Charters also provided protection from "cruel or unusual punishment" or punishment that robbed a person of their livelihoods. Yet today people claiming welfare benefits are subject to arbitrary sanctions without recourse to due process.

Guy Standing, Professor in Development Studies at SOAS and author of The Precariat Charter, will also be speaking at the event. He says the official celebration of the Magna Carta stinks of hypocrisy:

"To counter the false libertarian perspective of the Runnymede Tories, we need a Runnymede Progressives' perspective, recognising that the Magna Carta only came into existence when integrated with the Charter of the Forest in 1217, comprising a constitutional commitment to preserve the commons against private property and to guarantee the right to subsistence of all free men and women. Today, a Precariat Charter must include protection of the commons and due process for all, contrary to the regime of arbitrary sanctions and unlimited privatisation."

Festival highlights

The festival comprises workshops, skill-sharing, speakers, music and dancing [13].

Speakers on democracy and constitutional issues include Anthony Barnett (OpenDemocracy), David Graeber (author, The Democracy Project), Guy Standing (SOAS) and The Artist Taxi Driver (producer, Westmonster).

There will be daily workshops on making your own charter, an introduction to charters through the ages and presentations of ideas for what should be in a new charter (or constitution). Kurdish women will talk about democracy in Rojava and there will be a talks about Republican Democracy, the principles and practice of "the commons", The Charter of the Forest and Robin Hood.

On Monday at 5pm there will be a "Folk-moot" gathering at the 2,500-year old yew tree Ankerwycke where the Magna Carta was sealed 800 years ago where Anthony Barnett will speak on "The four principles of the Magna Carta our democracy needs today” and participants will consider the elements they would like to see in a modern charter.

Notes for editors:
1. See: http://www.runnymede.community and http://www.diggers2012.wordpress.com. The Runnymede Eco-village was set up in in Coopers Hill Coppice in 2012 by people from Occupy London and has been developing and expanding ever since. Runnymede is the historic birthplace of democracy where the Magna Carta was signed 800 years ago this year.

and it seemed likely that Upton might be next on their list.

The site has been occupied ever since and is now well established, with a large vegetable garden, a kitchen, caravans, guest accommodation, compost toilets, solar power and communal areas including a well stocked library. Children living on the site are attending local schools and the camp is well supported by local people, who are invited to call in and get involved in the life of the camp. Visitors are welcome any time.

The camp is supported by Frack Free Dee Coalition, which brings groups from across the Dee Valley area together, educates politicians and raises awareness of issues around fracking, coal bed methane and underground coal gasification. Coalition groups include Upton, Wirral, Mickle Trafford, Malpas, Wrexham, Farndon, Dudleston and Prestatyn.

At last, the Turkish awakening Erdogan could not crush | Alev Scott | Comment is free | The Guardian

Turkey fulfilled the legacy of Gezi Park yesterday. What protesters could not accomplish two years ago has now been achieved. Such a resounding vote for change – for the first time in 13 years – means the ludicrously named Justice and Development party (AKP) has lost its majority. Nobody expected this. As the votes came in last night and the opposition’s amazed celebrations began, no one partied harder than supporters of the minority rights-focused Peoples’ Democratic party (HDP), which blossomed out of the Gezi movement, and whose success in the face of intimidating odds proved the key to the AKP’s undoing.

There are now serious questions to be asked about Turkey’s political future in the wake of this extreme transformation, but on waking up this morning my overriding urge was to sing “Ding dong, the witch is dead!” and dance like a liberated Munchkin. Of course I’m talking about President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, who failed to surface yesterday evening after his ambitions for an executive presidency had been crushed with satisfying finality – and about whom I would never have written such blasphemous sentiments if his party still retained a majority.

Plug-in vehicle sales up 27% in May: Tesla, Nissan and Ford in the lead : TreeHugger

Plug-in sales (which is the broad term used to mean both fully electric cars and plug-in hybrids) haven't quite yet set the world on fire, but as I wrote almost exactly one year ago, they are doing "much better" than hybrids did at the equivalent stage in their development. I wrote:
Four years after being launched in North-America in 2000, the Toyota Prius hybrid had cumulative sales of around 52,000 (the Prius passed 3 million units sold last summer), according to IHS Automotive. Four years after launch, the Nissan LEAF electric car had cumulative sales of over 100,000 units. Four years in, the Chevrolet Volt and its European twin the Ampera have over 70,000 units sold. The Tesla Model S hasn't been around for four years, but its cumulative sales should be over 30,000 now, and accelerating fast. And then there are all kinds of other plug-ins selling in fewer numbers but making progress, with new models waiting in the wings.

It's good for the world, good for our health, and now it's also good for the bank account. The results of a new study will hopefully encourage more farmers to make the switch to organics.
There are many great reasons to buy organic food, such as reducing one’s exposure to pesticides, mitigating environmental pollution, improving soil quality, aiding pollination, and eating more nutrient-rich produce. It turns out there’s yet another reason to buy organic – it is a bigger money-maker for farmers, meaning your purchase directly helps farmers to make a better living.
The study reporting this newfound economic incentive for organics was just published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Its mission was to analyze the “financial competitiveness of organic farming on a global scale” by looking at 44 studies covering 55 crops grown in 14 countries on five continents – North America, Europe, Asia, Central America, and Australia.
The study concluded that organic farming is 22 to 35 percent more profitable for farmers than conventional agriculture.

Seven activists arrested during protests against fossil fuels across the UK | Environment | The Guardian

Seven climate activists have been arrested during a series of protests across the UK on Monday, which have seen a coal conference blockaded and the occupation of shale gas explorer’s PR company.
Media Zoo, a PR company in Fulham representing the chemicals company Ineos, which has acquired 729 squre miles of fracking licenses, said that seven demonstrators had forced their way into its offices at 9AM. A spokesman said one member of staff had been assaulted and police had been called. All seven protesters have been arrested.
Twelve supporters from the Reclaim the Power group bared their bottoms on the steps of the Department of Energy and Climate Change in Whitehall, in protest at new climate secretary Amber Rudd supporting gas power and capping on onshore wind power subsidies. The group’s message read “wind not gas”.
Protesters also disrupted a carbon capture and storage conference organised by the World Coal Association at the Institute of Directors (IOD) in London. The activists blocked all the entrances, gluing themselves to the building and each other.
One protester, who did not want to be named told the Guardian: “We don’t think carbon capture and storage is a viable technology for the foreseeable future. There’s nothing to suggest is going to work. It’s a false solution that’s just going to be used by to coal industry to legitimise new coal power.”
He added: “The Tory government are in bed with the big polluters, and leading up to COP [Paris climate talks] in December our government meeting up with the coal industry shows their total lack of commitment.”

*BREAKING* Hackney Council remove rough sleepers from its PSPO! Change.org

*BREAKING* Hackney Council remove rough sleepers from its PSPO!

Zahira Patel
Bromley, United Kingdom
5 Jun 2015 — Dear all,

A massive congratulations to all of you who signed this petition and a huge thank you for your support - because we did it! Hackney Council has just announced that it has amended its PSPO. You can find the amendment here: http://www.hackney.gov.uk/Assets/Documents/Amendment-to-PSPO.pdfand the announcement of the amendment on its website here: http://www.hackney.gov.uk/safer-communities-crime-community-safety.htm#pspo. Essentially, the amendment states that from 8 June 2015 onwards, references to rough sleeping from the PSPO will be deleted.

This is excellent news. I would like to thank Hackney Council for listening to our concerns and making sure that the PSPO will no longer be open to use against rough sleeping in and of itself.

On a more general level, however, I do believe that other provisions in the PSPO remain problematic. For example, I note with disappointment that the PSPO will still apply to begging. Further, I do worry that the ban on drinking in public (including in public toilets) will be disproportionately used against the homeless who do not have a home to drink in or who cannot afford to drink in bars/pubs/public restaurants. I believe that these problematic aspects stem from the broad nature of The Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 itself. If anyone would like to get involved in these issues further, I urge you to get in touch with The Manifesto Club who have been calling for better guidelines for PSPOs since the Act was proposed. You can find them here: http://www.manifestoclub.com/ and follow them on Twitter here: @manifestoclub.

The key thrust of this petition though, was to stop Hackney Council from criminalising the homeless and rough sleepers for the mere act of rough sleeping in and of itself. Hackney Council's removal of rough sleeping from its PSPO is therefore a huge victory. I hope, in time, that they will also reconsider whether begging should remain in the PSPO.

Once again, thank you to all of you who have joined me in this campaign and I hope this serves as a reminder to us all that when we come together in grass roots campaigns we can make important differences.

In light of the amendment to the PSPO, I am unsure about what will happen with the actions which have been planned such as the demo on 22nd June. I will discuss this with local campaign groups and update you further when I hear of their decision.

With very warm wishes,

Zahira Patel.

Die-ins, lock-ons and reclaiming the power -- New Internationalist

Die-ins, lock-ons and reclaiming the power -- New Internationalist

Although the Reclaim the Power (RtP) camp appeared almost deserted on Monday morning, inside the busy media marquee the atmosphere was tense with anticipation as we waited for news. At 9.04am the media phone rang for the first time and we heard that a group had succeeded in occupying the offices of UK energy company RWE Npower in Leeds to raise awareness of the links between climate crisis and people who freeze from lack of affordable fuel or energy for heating. The national day of action had started! The many weeks of preparation and hard work were finally paying off, resulting in shouts of excitement. Activists shared photos to social media, sent press releases, and called journalists. It was like a dam had broken. It seemed that no sooner had we written one thing up on the ‘action board’ than another call was coming in, and although in previous years RtP has focused more on the issue of fracking, this time the targets were drawn from all areas of the fossil fuel industry.
In the first few hours of the morning, protesters blockaded the offices of coal investors Invesco by locking themselves onto the revolving doors to highlight the links between corporations and government, while a banner drop outside shut down the road. Gas-masked campaigners in hazard suits marked off a nuclear contamination zone and staged a die-in outside PR company Carmargue, whose clients include Horizon Nuclear Power and Npower. At the same time, activists with brooms and aprons blocked suited delegates from all the entrances to a major coal conference taking place in an exclusive venue in the middle of London’s Pall Mall, leaving the suits milling around uncertainly on the pavement. With people glued across the main doors, and banners reading ‘you can’t clean coal’, the message was clear: leave it in the ground.
All through the morning the calls kept coming in, and we stopped working only to re-caffeinate ourselves and move the entire media operation to the more stable geodome as the winds began to pick up and shake the flimsy marquee. National news crews came to interview us, before rushing off to cover a ‘love-in’ between corporations and the Big 6 energy companies at a local Conservative headquarters. While anti-fracking Lancashire Nanas danced with giant fossil-fuel dinosaurs outside the gate of Didcot power station a more sober note was sounded by the shivering group of blanketed ‘grannies’ who presented the Oxford offices of British Gas with a ‘bill of wrongs’ including the 15,000 excess winter deaths from fuel poverty.
At 1.00pm cheers erupted around the camp as news came that we had just broken last year’s record of 13 different actions in one day and a 14th action had begun in the National Gallery in protest at oil sponsorship of the Arts. As the action board filled up and a new one was started, a call came in informing us that another group in London had set up a 10-metre tripod outside City Hall and super-glued themselves to the front door to highlight London Mayor Boris Johnson’s refusal to divest from fossil fuels.
While all this was going on the rest of camp was keeping busy with the kitchen crew preparing food for those on site, as others packed down the large marquees and carefully de-rigged the wind-turbine. By this time we had been working flat out for hours, and only the freshly baked vegan coffee cake was keeping us going. Not all the actions went off without a hitch, however. The group trying to get to Cuadrilla’s main offices in Litchfield had been stopped and searched by police. At 1.59pm, as the first groups of weary activists began trailing back in the gate to be met with hugs and applause, reassuring news came in that the group had finally managed to reach their Cuadrilla target. Obviously worried that something would happen, Cuadrilla’s offices appeared to be in total lock-down, with staff exiting the offices in an orderly manner as our activists cordoned off the building with hazard tape, and declared it a ‘Frack Free Zone’.
In total 18 separate actions took place all over Britain in the space of just 8 hours, with only 11 people arrested. These courageous actions were carried out by grandmothers, students, professionals taking a day off work, those experienced in taking direct action, and those who had never done anything like this in their lives before. What all of these diverse people have in common is the belief that the current fossil-fuelled path can only end in destruction, and if the governments are not going to do something about it on their own, then it is down to us to make sure they do. In the lead-up to the UN climate summit in Paris in December, where representatives from energy corporations are expected to be lobbying to push their own profit-driven agenda, it is vitally important that those of us concerned about this decision-making make our voices heard. After today, these voices will definitely be harder to ignore.

TO PARIS, AND BEYOND!

This December, world leaders will gather in Paris to strike a new deal for the climate. Time to Act will be working alongside other groups for mass mobilisation in the UK and Paris - find out more here!

THANK YOU EVERYBODY!

On 7 March 2015, over 20,000 people took to the UK streets to demand bold action on climate change, two months before a general election, and nine months before the COP 21 climate talks in Paris.

Jointly organised by the Campaign Against Climate Change and a dedicated team of amazing volunteers, Time To Act featured a rally which included a range of speakers but also encouraged the theme of the day to go beyond words, into actions. Dancing polar bears reclaimed the space at at Heathrow, banners were dropped at Trafalgar Square and off Westminster Bridge, the Tate was challenged by Art Not Oil for it's BP sponsorship and a giant carbon bubble was returned to the Shell HQ. During the march itself Occupy Democracy and Reclaim The Power orchestrated the largest ever recorded climate sit-down.

The day showed the breadth and diversity of the UK social and climate justice movement as we marched alongside our friends challenging austerity, TTIP, public services cuts, fracking, the arms trade and racism, and acknowledged the same broken system which exists beneath all of our struggles.

We look forward to continuing to grow, strengthen, to act and to challenge. To encourage others to join our movement and to lead from the grassroots up. This is our time and this is our planet, and the power of the people is stronger than the people in power. To Paris, and beyond....

Check out more photos and clips of the day and join the community.

And get involved in shaping what comes next.

Homeless people could be fined up to £1,000 for sleeping in doorways near popular tourist spots, under new rules launched by a London council.
It’s not clear how destitute rough sleepers are expected to pay.
Hackney Council’s Public Space Protection Order bans sleeping in public places – offenders are handed a £100 fixed penalty, which can rise to £1,000 in court.
Homelessness charities have condemned the move, saying that it turns rough sleepers – who are often escaping lives of abuse – into criminals.
A similar protection order was proposed by Oxford City Council, but the council backed off after a petition against the move garnered 72,000 signatures.
Matt Downie of homelessness charity Crisis said, ‘Rough sleepers deserve better than to be treated as a nuisance – they may have suffered a relationship breakdown, a bereavement or domestic abuse.
‘Those who sleep on the streets are extremely vulnerable and often do not know where to turn for help.
‘These individuals need additional support to leave homelessness behind, and any move to criminalise sleeping rough could simply create additional problems to be overcome.
