Who owns London? | Theory

Who owns London? | Theory: "n the seventeenth century, London was the City of London. As the eighteenth century progressed, aristocratic land owners started to develop their land; the Earl of Bedford was first, with Covent Garden, then came the Earl of Southampton with Bloomsbury Square, and the Earl of St Albans with St James’s Square. The 1760s saw the development of the Bedford Estate in Bloomsbury and the Portman Estate in Marylebone, followed by the Grosvenor Estate, mostly in the early nineteenth century.   The developments were carried out under a leasehold system. The land owner would let plots to a developer or builder, who would build at his own expense. and at the end of the lease the development would become the property of the ground landlord. Funds would be raised for the construction on the security of the lease agreement. The landlords’ estate surveyors would ensure the quality and finish of the elevations. The system was of great advantage to the landowner, who could develop his land with little risk or capital outlay, gained and income from from the ground rent, and at the end of the lease, usuallly 99 years, the property reverted to the estate. At the end of the lease period, the estates would renew leases at increased rents or redevelop the land. "

we need a national housing debate on the 1.5 million empty building and solutions to the falsely created housing crisis.
using these buildings we could create, untold homes and employment for buiders, carpenters and plumbers, fixing up and recycling these empty spaces.we need tp RE cycle RE think RE use
we need some evolutionary thought we recycle empty bottles n metal why not recycle the empty buildings,
The vast majority of squatters repair and fix up places, if we could formalise a system of reuse within 2-3 months a delapidated building could be fixed up creating jobs, then health n safety checked, then some of then some of the 110,00 homeless or 565,000 (GOV FIG) now living in overcrowded conditions in england, could move in.SOLUTIONS lets get on it.Come on Britain is a DIY nation, squatters call themselves DIY culture....solutions networking recycle the empties NOW

Reply to Guardian comment question where does 1.5 million empty buildings come from ...Empty Homes Agency....900,000 empty residentials plus 600,000 commercials Housing crisis what housing crisis....restricting the supply to push up the rents...

Empty Homes Agency Figures from 5-10  years ago.So the numbers may go up or down by 10-20,000 but the actual number Reported by EHA were
900,000 empty residential buildings in all of the UK
and 600,000 empty commercial (non residential ) buildings.
So we in the squatting community added them together to realise the SHOCKING FACT of 1.5 million empty buildings in the UK
The figure of 110,000 homeless people was quoted in the Daily Mail Article .Think this is street homeless and hidden homeless combined, like people sofa surfing and Families in B N B.
Charity advert on tube (Centre point) said 90,000 chidren in england ,scotland and wales will wake up homeless on Christmas....SHOCKING

Dec 2012 new govt figures show homeless families with children has risen 51% in the last year.
31st Oct 2014 Number of households declared homeless this year up 13%..
Theres is a massive invisible homeless nation out there that we used to help in the squats, which we have not been able to help since the propoganda war was declared and police have stood by an watched while security and owners, have beaten up and dragged out squatters and homeless families. No wonder these figures have gone through the roof and now can appreciate the young love activists #dragemout something has gotta change or 2015 is gona pop off.Homes for all for 2015 enuf is enuf

More people have been squeezed from the squatting safety net into the streets, massively over priced rental market, onto sofas or back to live with relatives.
The homeless and housing charities can provide you with the figures and scale of this human Tragedy.
Thanks to the propoganda against SELF HOUSING (Squatting)
the number of fights, assaults and attacks carried out against homeless /squatting people has increased.

Its a Housing War out there and people are being ground piteously beneath the boots of the landlords associations who sponsored Mike Weatherley MP £100,000 to push this law through while ignoring the Public Consultation. In Which 96% said do not criminalise squatting, including Police, lawyers associations Judges,Housing and homeless groups.Yet our Tory Tyrrany Condemned Government knows the score CONsult and iGNORE.
Time for Housing SOLUTIONS not more laws to criminalise the poor who house themselves.....

"Four more S144 Defendants Walk Free! Advisory Service for Squatters | Legal & practical advice for squatters and other homeless people

Advisory Service for Squatters | Legal & practical advice for squatters and other homeless people:

"Four more S144 Defendants Walk Free! Posted on November 12, 2014 by ass Another four people have been found “Not Guilty” of the criminal offence introduced in September 2012. They were arrested at a building in Scrutton Street in March. After over six months on bail, their trial took place at Stratford in October. When the police arrived, the squatters pointed out the “To Let: Commercial” sign outside, and explained that the building had previously been used as offices, and was not a residential building. Despite this, the police forced entry and arrested all four people inside the building. One of them didn’t even live there, and had only come to visit the occupants. They were all taken to the cop shop, and the squat was lost. The owner had produced a copy of a council tax bill for the top two floors of the building, and this was the main evidence relied on by the Crown Prosecution Service to go ahead with S144 charges against all four. During the trial, it became clear that the owner had switched to paying a mixture of business rates and (domestic) council tax for the building, rather than continuing to pay business rates for the entire property. Saving themselves a considerable amount of money by tax-dodging. However it also became clear that nobody from the council had ever visited the premises or checked if this was appropriate. The District Judge heard that the rooms resembled offices, with power and data points in the floor, no curtain rails, no central heating system, no kitchen facilities and no bathroom or shower. The only sink and toilet were in the basement and there was in fact no running water to the top two floors, making a mockery of the suggestion that anybody had lived there in the past. The entire building was open-plan, with no separation between the different parts, no separate entrance, bell or mail-box. The owners said that they had applied for planning consent to convert the top floors to residential use, but no conversion work had taken place. For a S144 conviction, the building must have been designed or adapted for residential use before the trespass, and this was obviously not the case here. In the face of this evidence, the judge was forced to disagree with the CPS, and find the defendants innocent of any crime. Let’s hope that they go on to sue the Metropolitan Police for wrongful arrest etc, and receive some financial compensation for losing their home and their liberty in this way. "

Phoenixs comment to Guardian article on Love Activists...get involved lets SNOWBALL a National Housing Debate on SOLUTIONS to Housing Crisis #olsx @occupynn

We are calling for a national housing debate, the figures speak for themselves 1.5 million empty buildings,110,000 homeless thats 10 empty buildings for every homeless person. The supply is being restricted and that pumps up rents and prices, for many hard working people.
Squatting is a life saver for many people on the street.
The Government and media sold a LARGE LIE,that is echoed many times. You cannot squat someones home while they at shops or on holiday. There was a law called the Displaced Residential Occupier,1975/77? which meant police could kick u out immediately if u did this.
You can only squat an EMPTY building.Shelter is a basic Human Right.
The housing crisis has been falsely created,
The Mp Mike weatherley who sponsored the law to criminalise homeless people taking shelter in residential buildings,(Squatting = SELF HOUSING )
was paid by Landlords associations £100,000 to his campaign fund.
This is NOT corruption they claim as it has been all declared above board in the house of commons register.Such is the state of our corporatocracy.
for more info check www.squashcampaign.org www.squatter.org.uk #occupydemocracy #dragemout #olsx @occupynn and my blog for updates from the streets, squats and front lines of change www.phoenixrainbow23.blogspot.co.uk ........more soon got to go help some people with a new squat, its started to rain, keep bringing support to Love Street 2A Charing Cross rd....this is just the beginning Homes for ALL campaign 2015
...SOLUTION Proposal make a list of all buildings that are going to be empty from 1-5 years, owners to declare.
Then make a list of those needing housing.
Create Jobs and employment for roofers plumbers,n builders recycling some of these buildings for homes, projects and community spaces.
(We have had many arranged deals with landlords to stay in a squatted building for the INTERIM period until they need to use it.
Formalise this arrangement for the Good of ALL.)Solving Housing Crisis and lowering extortionate rents and spiralling house price inflation.Houses went up 30% in london last year.we need a Housing debate up to and beyond the next election to create SOLUTIONS...great that this comment section in the Guardian is exploding that debate into the National Publics eye....keep networking...

"The scandal of empty buildings made us take direct action on homelessness I and the other Love Activists can't stand by while 1.5 million buildings sit empty and 110,000 people don't have homes Share 8 inShare 0 Email Clare Pauling theguardian.com, Friday 26 December 2014 16.30 GMT Jump to comments (41) Some of the Love Activist protesters at the building on the corner of Charing Cross Road. Photograph: Graham Turner for the Guardian The Love Activists hit the headlines on 23 December when the Guardian reported that we had occupied a former RBS building in central London. Our plan was to open it up to homeless people on Christmas Day and provide a hot festive lunch for all. We appealed for donations of food and cooking utensils and were overwhelmed by the generous response. In 2012 squatting in a residential building became illegal: squatting in commercial premises remains a civil offence. Property owners have to seek a court order to remove squatters. We knew that we would not be allowed to remain for long in the former bank building but as the building is currently not in use we hoped the owners would wait until after we had provided the Christmas lunch. It is a very spacious building in good condition with ample cooking facilities to provide food for a large number of people. We tried to negotiate with the owners to leave after Christmas to avoid them and the taxpayer the time and expense of taking us to court but they did not respond. The company got an emergency injunction from the high court and without warning bailiffs evicted us early on Christmas Eve. I and Danny Freeman, another of the Love Activists staged a 10-hour protest on the balcony of the building. We were informed that a high court judge had varied the injunction allowing us to return to the building to prepare and serve Christmas lunch and agreed to leave the balcony. But police immediately arrested us. Another court order prevented us from returning to the building so we served an uncooked Christmas lunch yesterday on the pavement outside the former bank. We have had so many food donations and have continued handing out free food and clothing to those in need. Our dream is to have somewhere where we can cook and distribute free food to everyone who needs it – an inclusive food bank rather than one like the current model where people have to be referred and are limited to a certain number of visits."

‘Love Activists’ succeed in offering Christmas lunch to London homeless | UK news | The Guardian:

"A group of squatters, known as the “Love Activists”, have provided an uncooked Christmas lunch to homeless Londoners on the pavement outside the former bank they had been occupying, after they were evicted from the premises on Christmas Eve morning. They have vowed to continue their protests. The group of 20 activists occupied the imposing grade ll listed building on the corner of Charing Cross Road and the Strand that previously housed an RBS bank, in the early hours of Saturday morning, saying they found an open fire escape door. All say they are homeless and occupied the building to raise awareness about the epidemic of homelessness in London especially amongst young people. There were 6,437 people sleeping rough in London last year, an increase of 8% on the figure two years previously. Many of those, like the Love Activist team, are young people. "

The squatters, calling themselves the “Love Activists”, took over the vacant building earlier this week and planned to provide a free Christmas dinner in protest at the capital’s housing crisis. Most of the activists left the building when the bailiffs turned up with a court order early on Wednesday, but two refused to leave and took to the ledge of a 10-metre-high balcony as a police officer stood nearby. Scotland Yard said the pair, a man aged 22 and a woman aged 21, came down on Wednesday evening and had been arrested on suspicion of breaching a court order. A spokesman said: “They currently remain in custody at a central London police station.” The activists had been vowing to maintain their protest, on the ledge of the first-floor balcony of the grade II-listed building on the corner of Charing Cross Road and St Martin’s Lane, during Christmas day. But on Wednesday evening a high court judge amended the injunction evicting them to allow them to re-enter solely for the purpose of “preparation, serving and participation in a festive Christmas lunch for homeless people” on Christmas Day."

Photograph: Diane Taylor A group of squatters vowed to take their high-stakes standoff with the police and bailiffs into Christmas Day after protestors scaled the balcony of a five-story Victorian building in central London. Two members of the self-styled “Love Activists” refused to leave the former RBS office when bailiffs arrived to evict them on Wednesday morning. As police officers and bailiffs looked on, the squatters climbed on to the ledge of a first-floor balcony of the grade II-listed building on the corner of Charing Cross Road and St Martin’s Lane. The squatters took over the vacant building earlier this week and planned to provide a free festive lunch to homeless people on Christmas Day in protest at the housing crisis. Most of the squatters left the building when the bailiffs turned up, but two activists refused to leave and took to the ledge of a 30ft-high balcony as a police officer stood nearby. About 10 police officers were at the scene, with a police van and ambulance on standby. Concerns grew for the safety of the balcony protesters as the temperature dropped, prompting paramedics to warn that they risked losing their balance if they refused to come down. A Metropolitan police spokesman confirmed that officers had been called in by the bailiffs to prevent a breach of the peace. No arrests had been made at the time of publication. One of the squatters on the balcony, Danny Freeman, 22, told the Guardian: “We heard banging on the door at 8am and some people forced their way in. We don’t know who they were because they wouldn’t tell us and have not provided us with any paperwork. “I climbed on to the balcony and then I called the police. I can’t put into words how distressed I feel about this. We won’t be able to provide Christmas lunch for the homeless now and about 50 people who were sleeping here will be homeless over Christmas. I’m here for the long haul, I’m not planning to come down from the balcony. I’d rather spend Christmas here than in the cells.” In October, Freeman carried out a protest by standing on a Winston Churchill statue in Parliament Square in London in a 28-hour standoff with police. About 50 protesters – including some who said they were homeless – turned up to support the occupation with rallying chants of “homes not banks”. The standoff was mostly peaceful, but police officers at one point scuffled with a protestor who tried to push back their barriers. Pete Phoenix, one of the protesters, was invited inside the building by police negotiators to speak to the protesters on the balcony. “There are ambulance staff, police officers and police negotiators inside the building. The ambulance staff have warned the protesters that their legs have got very cold which makes the blood supply pool in their feet, this could lead them to faint and fall off the ledge. They are getting very cold and we are concerned about them,” he said. "

More action on empty homes wanted, Halifax study finds | Society | The Guardian: "More than three-quarters of Britons want to see stronger action by politicians to tackle the problem of empty homes, according to a study by Halifax and campaigning charity the Empty Homes Agency. Of the 2,000 people questioned, 78% think the government should place a higher priority on tackling empty homes, while 74% want their local authority to do more."

From Gazi to Gezi - trailer shown by the film maker at Love HQ Tues eve GREAT FILM Network it

Gazi to Gezi - a stone's throw away" explores the poetry of a nationwide revolt in Istanbul, Europe's largest city. An explosive mix of the city’s inhabitants come together to fight the police and barricade themselves into one of the metropolis' few remaining green spaces, Gezi Park. All are present; from the liberal students, to oppressed, illegal revolutionary groups living among the slums of the city. The film, told through the memory of a stone, attempts to link the past with the present in a cinematic format which is neither factual nor fictitious. Scored to a beautiful soundtrack, the audience is taken into a rebellious world.

Love Activist Press Release
Love Activists and Squatter and Homeless Autonomy (S.H.A.) have seized a disused RBS bank abandoned for two years in the heart of Westminster; a building that has been taken by the people, for the people. RBS was bailed out £46 billion by the taxpayer, equating a loss of £1500 per UK taxpayer. This means RBS are 82% owned by the people of the UK. This is a public repossession. Despite the 1.5 million empty buildings, There are 110,000 homeless people in the UK this winter, and squatting is a direct solution to this housing crisis. We demand a repeal of the 2012 laws, which have outlawed squatting of residential buildings. This could provide adequate housing solutions to the homeless.
We have opened up the space as a community area, completely separate from the greedy capitalist structure of modern society. The community will provide a free meal center for those living on the street, and to gather support to continue this project. A planned Christmas dinner will take place on Christmas day supported by Beat 'n Street Kitchen, and Food not Bombs. Our aims are to continue to provide food to the homeless, and a safe space for them to rest. Further to this, there are several spaces on the upper floors for groups wishing to hold events, workshops and talks. We would love for the whole community to be involved with this space.
Finally, we demand an end to the increasingly militarised Police and State violence and repression against those most marginalised and voiceless. We want homes, not banks and jails. Survive, protest, resist, reclaim. We will continue to expropriate wealth and space on behalf of the people. Everything that is necessary is just. Love Activists and S.H.A. say DRAG 'EM OUT (‪#‎dragemout‬)

Love Activists turn former RBS office in London into housing protest squat | Society | The Guardian: "Love Activists turn former RBS office in London into housing protest squat Campaigners plan to set up food bank and provide free Christmas lunch to homeless as they criticise bankers Share 3118 inShare 2 Email Diane Taylor The Guardian, Tuesday 23 December 2014 21.28 GMT Jump to comments (323) Some of the Love Activist protesters at the building on the corner of Charing Cross Road. Photograph: Graham Turner for the Guardian A prime, five-storey Victorian office building off Trafalgar Square in London has been taken over by a group of squatters who plan to open the building on Christmas Day and provide a free festive lunch for homeless people in a protest against the housing crisis. Calling themselves the Love Activists, a group of 20 people on Saturday took over the grade II-listed building on the corner site of Charing Cross Road and St Martin’s Lane which has been empty for 18 months. Previously leased by the RBS group and housing a branch of National Westminster Bank, the squatters say that the building has “been taken by the people” in a statement posted on their Facebook page. The current ownership of the corner site is unclear: Land Registry records show that the owner is Greencap Ltd, a Jersey company that appears to have been dissolved. According to one of the activists, Danny Freedland, 22, the fact that the building was previously used by RBS, which was bailed out by the taxpayer during the financial crisis and today remains 79% owned by the state, has made their message of “homes not banks” all the more resonant."

A World to Win | Front line | Occupy Democracy xmas 2014:

"Creating a space for democracy Reporting & video: Corinna Lotz; photos: Peter Arkell “Our aim is to bring unity to all the different single issue campaigns in order to focus on the deficit in our democracy,” Matt Bonner said, standing below Churchill’s statue, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Along with other campaigners, he had weathered a cold night on the narrow strip of pavement trying to sleep as traffic and the sound of Big Ben’s chimes continued overnight. It was the second day of Occupy Democracy’s third attempt to occupy Parliament Square.  “We’ve managed to maintain a small space, although we were threatened with arrest if we attempted to expand from the pavement to the Green – unlike our earlier occupation in October. The night before, some 100 police officers ringed the protesters with a double kettle while the occupiers continued with their discussions. “Westminster is the natural place to highlight the issue of democracy, as well as challenge the farcical bye-laws that threaten our right to protest. ”We’ve had workshops and debates on a range of issues, focusing particularly on the housing crisis. We are also building a concrete set of demands to see what kind of alternatives we would like to see. “Occupy Democracy has been using this space to democratically assemble – that is in itself the way that we work to consensus and the processes we use are to create a truly democratic space. So I personally would be for any kind of that creative platform for that purpose.”    "

Pete (the Temp) Verses Climate Change

Stoke on Trent Town Hall Post Occupation Council has come on board to ask MOJ for 6 months for community proposal with Council backing....we are winning but keep networking

Following the recent month long occupation of Fenton Town Hall, the Ministry of Justice, the government department charged with the building's disposal, agreed to take the community's proposals further by bringing in the major stakeholder Stoke-on-Trent City Council into negotiations alongside the community / Urban Vision. A meeting between Urban Vision and senior councillors / managers at the civic centre in Stoke led to this letter being sent to Shailesh Vara MP from Cllr Mohammed Pervez. It could be considered a Christmas present, especially paragraph 2 (unfortunately Facebook doesn't allow for bold fonts). Financial backing aside, though in time there could be the possibility of assistance with accessing external funding, this is a 100% endorsement from the city council:
----------------------------------------------
Shailesh Vara MP
Fenton Town Hall Disposal
Thank you for considering Urban Vision North Staffordshire’s proposal for the future of Fenton Town Hall and for giving us the opportunity to comment directly on this proposal.
As you are aware, it is the aspiration of Stoke-on-Trent City Council that Fenton Town Hall should be returned for the benefit of local residents and businesses. Following our discussions with Urban Vision, it has been agreed that the building should be placed into Urban Vision/community ownership and not the council. This approach will maximise access to external funding opportunities, will be in line with council’s own strategy around empowering communities to become more independent of the local authority, and allow the community to take greater ownership of their own futures against a backdrop of on-going budgetary pressures within the council.
We believe Urban Vision’s outline proposals have significant potential and they appear to have a good degree of confidence that they can make the proposition work. However, Urban Vision also recognises that more work would need to be done to develop these proposals into a full business case which could take up to 6 months. If required, the council would be willing to work in collaboration with the MoJ to facilitate this window of opportunity with them and to offer support and guidance to Urban Vision during this period. The council would also be willing to consider the offer from Urban Vision for a place on the Board of Trustees should they proceed with a Trust model. We would be happy to work with yourselves and Urban Vision to understand the implications of such an arrangement.
I trust this provides some assurance for the council’s willingness to work with Urban Vision to safeguard the future of Fenton Town Hall through a self-sustainable model within the community ownership.
We sincerely request and hope that you will seriously consider Urban Vision’s proposal and allow them a six months extension to bring this building back into sustainable community use for the greater good of our communities and businesses.
Yours Sincerely
Mohammed Pervez
---------------------------------------
Please re-read the following:
"Following our discussions with Urban Vision, it has been agreed that the building should be placed into Urban Vision/community ownership and not the council. This approach will maximise access to external funding opportunities, will be in line with council’s own strategy around empowering communities to become more independent of the local authority, and allow the community to take greater ownership of their own futures against a backdrop of on-going budgetary pressures within the council."
This qualifies the council's earlier request for the Town Hall to come back to the people of Stoke-on-Trent and for the people of Stoke-on-Trent to be consulted over the building's future. In future negotiations, as before, reference will certainly be made to the community plan produced by the Fenton Community First Panel which highlighted the demand for another community facility in Fenton and the opportunity Urban Vision / the community's plans for the building present for the town and the wider conurbation of Stoke-on-Trent.
I truly believe that the occupation effected change and that we got out at the right time. To use numbers I would say our chances prior to occupation were 2/10, now they are 6/10.
Not a victory, but a MAJOR step forward.
I am posting a copy of the letter on the files section of this page.

Top 5 Groundbreaking Movements That Rocked the Boat in 2014 | Alternet

Top 5 Groundbreaking Movements That Rocked the Boat in 2014 | Alternet: "December 18, 2014  |     2014 was an unjust year to say the least. From corporations pursuing control of the Internet to cops getting away with murder, the last 12 months were certainly filled with oppression. But that doesn’t mean people didn’t fight back. There was plenty of resistance from activists across the country pushing for change. Here is a countdown of the top five groundbreaking movements that rocked the boat this year. 5. The fight for net neutrality rages on. In January 2014, a court decision ruled in favor of Verizon, which had challenged the Federal Communication Commission’s ability to enforce net neutrality. The decision has sparked a yearlong fight to demand an Internet that is open and equal for all. Protesters set up camp outside FCC headquarters and followed up months later with actions in multiple cities after word got out that the FCC was considering a shoddy solution. But the most effective use of people power was illustrated by citizens’ responses to the commission. The FCC website even crashed at one point following a hilarious plea by John Oliver to flood the site with comments. In the end, the FCC received a record of 3.7 million responses. In an analysis of the first 800,000, only one percent were against net neutrality. The FCC will likely make a decision on net neutrality at the beginning of 2015. 4. The year of minimum wage victories. The federal minimum wage remains a measly $7.25—a 25 percent decrease in worth since it peaked in 1968. Workers have had enough. People across the nation came together to make 2014 an historic year for minimum wage victories. Both Seattle and San Francisco passed the country’s highest minimum wage bills that will phase in $15. The Chicago City Council voted to raise the city’s minimum wage to $13, and voters in Oakland passed a November ballot initiative raising the wage to $12.25. Four red states also passed minimum wage increases during the midterm elections. Early in the year, President Obama raised the minimum wage to $10.10 for all 2 million federally contracted workers. Low-wage workers are playing a crucial role in sparking a national conversation around fair pay and labor practices. Fast-food workers continued strikes throughout the year, holding their largest action this December with workers in 190 cities participating. Walmart workers also took to the streets for various direct actions, including their third and largest Black Friday strike to date. (Walmart CEO announced plans to raise workers' wages so that no worker makes the federal minimum wage.) And federally contracted workers walked off their jobs, insisting that $10.10 is not enough. 3. The struggle for ending deportations sees success. Dubbed by some as the “deporter-in-chief,” Obama has deported 2 million undocumented immigrants during his time in office, more than any other president in history. For years, organizers have called for an end to deportations, and their actions certainly didn’t slow down this year. Instead, organizers with Not1More, one of the most influential campaigns in the immigrant rights movement, held sit-ins, stopped deportation buses and went on hunger strikes. Locally, immigrant rights groups nationwide worked on ending the Secure Communities program, in which U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement works together with local law enforcement to deport undocumented immigrants. More than 140 local jurisdictions have passed ordinances or executive orders stating that they will no longer comply with the program. In November, Obama announced plans to shield about 4 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, a huge success for the movement. The movement plans to continue its fight to end deportations for all. "

Put the Evil Bastards on Trial: The Case for Trying Bush, Cheney and More for War Crimes | Alternet

Put the Evil Bastards on Trial: The Case for Trying Bush, Cheney and More for War Crimes | Alternet: "December 20, 2014  |          “There is no longer any doubt as to whether the current administration has committed war crimes. The only question that remains to be answered is whether those who ordered the use of torture will be held to account.”   — Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, June 2008 We’ve seen it in Ferguson, Missouri, with Darren Wilson getting off scot-free for killing Michael Brown. And we’ve seen it again in Staten Island, with Daniel Pantaleo getting off scot-free for killing Eric Garner. So why shouldn’t scores of CIA agents, contractors, higher-ups and other government officials—including former President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney—get off scot-free for torturing hundreds of detainees, including some complete innocents?  That, apparently, is the reigning logic following the release of the Senate torture report."
