Underground Farm: Michel Roux Jr. Reveals Plans to Supply London With Fresh Produce | EcoWatch

Underground Farm: Michel Roux Jr. Reveals Plans to Supply London With Fresh Produce | EcoWatch: "SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS Underground Farm: Michel Roux Jr. Reveals Plans to Supply London With Fresh Produce Brandon Baker | January 31, 2014 8:45 am | Comments Tweet One hundred feet below the streets of London, a 2.5-acre farm will soon sell fresh veggies grown on a not-so-traditional farm. Dubbing it a “food revolution” underneath your feet, Zero Carbon Food owners Richard Ballard and Steven Dring have teamed up with two-star Michelin chef Michel Roux Jr. to open their Growing Underground farm later this year. Located under the Northern Line near Clapham North tube station, the Growing Underground will offer leafy greens, micro-greens and herbs grown using LED lights and a hydroponics system. “When I first met these guys I thought they were absolutely crazy,” said Roux, who operates Le Gavroche in London and has appeared on Hell’s Kitchen and other shows. “But when I visited the tunnels and sampled the delicious produce they are already growing down there I was blown away. The market for this produce is huge.”"

This mass extinction is due, in large measure, to humankind's unsustainable methods of production and consumption, including the destruction of habitats, expanding cities, pollution, deforestation, global warming and the introduction of "invasive species"

- you'll be very welcome.

Who we are
We are a group of activists who are passionate about sustaining activism from the inside out, encouraging a climate of looking after ourselves and each other so that we can keep on the fight for a better world.
We observe that activism is often physically and emotionally exhausting, involves going to boundaries and often beyond them, and can at times feel hopeless, uncomfortable and overwhelming. To be able to carry on doing what we do, we recognise the importance of taking care of our needs, stopping sometimes to rest, finding space for our feelings before they get on top of us, and staying connected with each other and ourselves.
What we do
*On-action support spaces for recovering & re-charging (quiet held spaces for listening, tea, resting, massage etc.)
*“Roaming” support at actions / demos
*Referrals for post-action trauma support (links with Activist Trauma Support, trained counsellors)
*Monthly drop-in space in London: support, networking, idea-gathering
*Facilitating post-action debriefing sessions
*Workshops on sustaining activism

Join the legal block today to protect your home and community from fracking

Join the legal block today to protect your home and community from fracking

Wrongmove | 13.01.2014 22:32 | Social Struggles | South Coast

Wrongmove.org is an online hub to raise awareness of the areas in Britain which could be affected by hydraulic fracturing, and help people in Britain challenge fracking companies looking to operate in their communities.

It is unlawful for fracking companies to drill under your home without your permission. Search your postcode and join the legal block today to protect your home and community from fracking.

Wrongmove.org is an online hub to raise awareness of the areas in Britain which could be affected by hydraulic fracturing, and help people in Britain challenge fracking companies looking to operate in their communities.

About the Not For Shale legal block

The Not for Shale legal block is a campaign by Greenpeace to support residents in fracking-affected communities to challenge the Government and the companies trying to drill in their immediate area.
The Not For Shale map uses data released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. It shows the 14th licencing round of land that is under consideration for onshore oil and gas drilling in Britain.

Through wrongmove.org, residents can refuse permission to frack under their homes, even if companies have made, or are already making plans to drill there.

Fracking is a form of fossil fuel extraction that involves horizontal drilling. Fracking companies can drill up to two miles from a drill site, meaning operations regularly pass under people’s homes and farmland.

But in English law, if you own land then your rights extend to all the ground beneath it. The Supreme Court held in 2010 in Bocardo SA v Star Energy [2010] UKSC 35; [2011] 1 AC 380 that these rights apply when someone wants to drill underneath your land. That means that if someone drills under your home without permission, or without a statutory right, it is a trespass and trespass is unlawful.

In Scotland, people also have very substantial and complex property rights, so the situation will be even more difficult for fracking companies to get around.

Surprisingly, the area being considered by the government for oil and gas extraction includes highly populated areas, and a large part of London. Whilst this seems crazy, Boris Johnson has been on record saying he is open to fracking under the capital, and so London is still included in the area that could be subject to drilling plans.

The more people who explicitly say that they do not permit drilling to take place under their house or land, the harder it is for companies to ignore the law – and the clearer it is to government that people do not want the country to be put ‘up for shale’.

Recent newspaper reports suggest that fracking companies are worried that the law as it stands could stop or delay them from drilling. They are lobbying the government to change the law so that they can go ahead and drill without the consent of residents. We'll stand with residents every step of the way in order to try to stop the threat that fracking poses to our climate, our countryside and our health.

About fracking

Fracking is the destructive process of blasting water, sand and chemicals deep underground in order to get out gas or oil. Energy companies want to go to extreme lengths to uncover hard-to-reach fossil fuels from under our homes and countryside – fossil fuels which the International Energy Agency says must stay in the ground if we are to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change. Fracking threatens not only our climate, but also our countryside and water, and most experts agree – it won’t do anything to bring down energy bills.

Stop the War in 2014

Stop the War Coalition

1) Britain's foreign wars a central issue in 2014 - the campaign goes on
2) Battle of the Somme: the horrific epitome of the first world war

1) Britain's foreign wars a central issue in 2014 - the campaign goes on

Last year we helped stop a new intervention in Syria, please help us keep the war makers on the run in 2014.
  • As we approach the withdrawal date of troops, a debate is raging on the Afghan war. Many troops and bases are proposed to remain, further prolonging a conflict which has lasted longer than the first and second world wars put together, and which has not been about helping the Afghan people but about strategic control of the region. The rivalry with China and Russia makes the need for this western control even greater. We must campaign to ensure all troops and bases leave now.
  • The 100th anniversary of the first world war will feature prominently in 2014. The government and its allies want to use the anniversary to highlight and promote the role of the military in society. Various 'revisionist' historians are arguing that this was a war for democratic freedom, despite the evidence that it is was an imperial war between rival powers, highly industrialised, which ended in revolution and major social change because of revulsion at its consequences. The government's plans have already run into high profile opposition, with 10,000 people signing the No Glory petition protesting these plans and there will be events across the country challenging their revisionism.
  • The government's attempt to rehabilitate the military is extending to promoting 'military values' in schools. Anti-war campaigners and teachers should oppose such moves, arguing that children should learn the truth about war.
  • The Chilcot report on the Iraq war is due to make its belated appearance in the New Year. It is our chance to demand a holding to account of Tony Blair, Jack Straw and the rest who took us to war in Iraq based on lies. There should be full disclosure of all secret documents and an indictment of Blair.
These priorities are explored amongst others in War and peace in 2014 on the Stop the War web site.

Anti-Fracking Protesters deny attacking a Police Helicopter

A | 07.01.2014 19:07 | Energy Crisis | Liverpool
The anti-fracking protest camp at Barton Moss in Manchester was yesterday (06/01/2014) overun by Greater Manchester police who have alleged that just after midnight (04/01/2014) a flare was fired at or into the path of a police helicopter landing at nearby Barton Aerodrome. Protesters reject the claim that a flare was fired from the protest site...

The anti-fracking protest camp at Barton Moss in Manchester was yesterday (06/01/2014) overun by Greater Manchester police, who sought to intimidate campaigners and split the growing consensus between protesters and local residents to resist the further destruction of our environment by these money and power hungry capitalists.

GM Police have alleged that a flare was fired at or in to the path of a low flying police helicopter. They have used this to obtain search warrants to 'search' the protesters tents, and to also launch a PR campaign to split the growing relationship between local residents and protesters.

The following is a report from a local 'independent' online news source that includes direct quotes from protesters:

“Barton Moss protesters 'reject absolutely' helicopter flare claim
By Tom Rodgers

Campaigners at Frack Free Greater Manchester say the claim that protesters fired a flare at a police helicopter is a bare-faced lie and an excuse to search tents by Greater Manchester Police.
Police say a flare was fired into the approach path of a police helicopter landing at City Airport Barton in the early hours of Saturday 4 January.

It repeats a similar claim made by GMP on New Year's Eve that someone from the camp fired a flare at a police helicopter.

Ch Supt Roberts continued: "An attack on the police of this nature has nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not exploratory drilling is right or wrong.

"Whilst I recognise the genuine concerns of many of the protesters in relation to exploratory drilling, it is obvious that there is also an element of regular protesters from outside the Greater Manchester area who seem more interested in seeking confrontation with the police."

But protesters on site say the claim is bogus and that no flare gun will be found.

Speaking to SalfordOnline.com from Barton Moss Road where three women have this morning chained themselves to concrete blocks, Brian, who has lived in Irlam for four years and has a tent on site, said: "If there has been someone firing 'flares' at helicopters it's probably a local kid with a firework.

"Police have been in and out of tents already - illegally - so this is just their way of searching on their own terms."

Rachel Thompson from Frack Free Greater Manchester told SalfordOnline.com today: "We refute absolutely these claims.

"We've not seen any evidence to prop this up, and until we do, it appears to be an excuse to show the camp in a bad light and to be able to get a warrant to search the camp."

Campaigners pointed out the "outrageous" and "aggressive" tactics employed by Greater Manchester Police throughout the campaign.

Sacha Conway, who is currently living at the camp, denied the claims and said: "No flare was fired from this camp on Saturday or any other day. We would condem any such action as aggressive, violent and in breach of our very strict safe spaces policy. We are peaceful people who wish to stop the destruction of this land by IGas and all of the other fracking companies."

Around 50 anti-fracking protesters are permanently stationed in tents on Barton Moss Road, some 200 yards from the entrance to the coal-bed methane and shale gas test drilling site currently occupied by energy firm IGas.

In recent weeks protests against the drilling have been stepped up, with protesters complaining about multiple arrests at Swinton police station, one man locking himself by the neck to a lorry on Barton Moss Road.

Protesters, or protectors, as they prefer to be known, are campaigning against the likely fracking that will occur in Salford if IGas are successful in finding shale gas during their drilling tests."
