Cuadrilla will be attempting to bring more drilling equipment into the site. Large numbers of people are essential to prevent them from doing so.
Please come down and support the people of Balcombe! If fracking is not nipped in the bud it will spread thousands of wells across Sussex and the rest the country. Confront the frackers now or one day they will be on your doorstep.
What to bring:
Please bring essentials such as food, water, and appropriate clothing/sun protection. We will be camping on Thursday evening so please bring a sleeping bag/mat and a tent to share with friends. Don't worry if you don't have one, we can organise sharing. Try to avoid bringing alcohol, drugs, anything which could be construed as a weapon, glass etc.

Dozens of people were detained over the weekend as part of the "Summer Heat" direct action campaign for environmental justice. At least 44 people were arrested on Sunday in a march on the Brayton Point coal plant in Somerset, Massachusetts. It’s one of several coal plants targeted by calls for closure and a transition to cleaner sources of energy. On Friday, 54 people were arrested after blockading the offices of the State Department contractor involved in assessing the environmental impact of the Keystone XL pipeline. The firm Environmental Resources Management, ERM, has come under scrutiny following the recent news it failed to disclose financial ties to the tar sands industry in Canada. In a statement, the group 350.org said the action was taken "to expose ERM’s corruption and conflicts of interest in having contractual relationships with Big Oil."

Australia’s legendarily irresponsible mining industry has a new plan: while the planet faces catastrophic climate change, build the world’s largest coal mining complex, and then build a shipping lane to that port straight through the greatest ecological treasure we have - the Great Barrier Reef!
This is a terrible idea with devastating consequences, and the investor group Aurizon that’s backing it know it. They’re getting cold feet, and we might be able to push them over the edge, and kill the project. One of the main potential funders has even donated to climate activism!
If one million of us express our head-shaking disbelief at this crazy project in the next few days, we can help get Aurizon to pull funding and maybe even persuade the Australian PM to step in. This is what Avaaz is for, let’s raise a voice for common sense!

Day 3 of Balcombe village's struggle against Frack Attack
After Thursday's successful stand -off, Friday saw ninety police
deployed to force the first of Cuadrilla's trucks through the human
barricades in front of the site gates. As protestors linked arms the
cops began to make the first arrests.
Altogether sixteen arrests were made – using a section of the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act
1992 , which was legislation first brought in to target flying pickets
during industrial disputes. Two more were arrested on Saturday morning.
Obviously Cuadrilla have now managed to start getting trucks in – but
they're on a tight schedule with their drilling licence over by October.
Allegedly they were supposed to get drilling today (Saturday) but
that's been put back until Monday already. According to Anna Dark, a
community representative “They need to get forty days of drilling done
before the end of their licence, they've lost a day already – we can
stop this!”
Cuadrilla's planning permission only allows for vehicle movements at
certain times – they were supposed to stop at 1 pm today. Sussex cops
started off claiming that there was an extension but backed down in the
face of irate villagers demands to see the paperwork.
Undeterred by the show of repression a large protest camp has sprung up
along the verge and with 90% of Balcombe village residents saying
they're in favour of direct action this one could run and run.
SchNEWS has heard that there will be no truck movements tomorrow but
there will be transport heading from Brighton up to the drilling site –
leaving at 9 a.m from outside RBS on the Old Steine

At 8.30am yesterday morning, anti-fracking activists gathered for a clowning action at the Directorate for Planning and Environmental Affairs (DPEA) in Falkirk. Dressed in colourful clown costumes a group of 17 activists mocked the dangers of fracking with ridiculous play. Clowns burst in to the car park with music, banners and a fracking tower as bemused workers looked on. Games continued to the to town centre to raise awareness among the public.
A spokesperson for the actions said “we are here today to highlight the absurdity of going down yet another route of non-renewable energy that is a short term and dangerous solution to a long term energy/carbon problem with it's own set of potentially devastating environmental consequences.
“Despite mounting evidence of the dangers of fracking contaminating local water supplies releasing high carbon methane gas and risk of catastrophic explosions, the government is committed to giving fracking multi-nationals the green light, placing profit over local opposition and the potential for environmental destruction.
“We are here to show those making the decision about DART Energy’s application to frack in the Falkirk and other areas, that opposition to these irresponsible operations is mounting. We are here in support of local opposition to the plans and ongoing international opposition to fracking elsewhere.” (1)
The DPEA was targeted as clown investigations uncovered evidence that the decision on what happens next with the fracking plans in Scotland’s central belt will be taken there by government civil servants(2). This follows DART Energy’s appeal to the Scottish government when Falkirk and Stirling councils failed to make the decision due to resistance from local communities, and a lack of credible information on health and environmental concerns(3).
The action happened amid growing concerns over both the Westminster and Holyrood governments' current favouring of short sighted, lucrative non-renewable energy plans, despite their alleged commitments to cutting carbon and pursuing renewable energy resources. Last week George Osbourne announced tax breaks for fracking firms operating within the UK (of 50% more than other energy companies(4). This break was championed by Lynton Crosby, the Conservative Party Chief Strategist and the man responsible for promoting shale gas fracking in Australia. Crosby's PR firm “Crosby Textor” also represents the Australian Petroleum Exploration Association, of which DART is a subsidiary.

From Yesterday - Work halted as activists block entrance to Sussex fracking site
Work has come to a standstill at Fracking company Cuadrilla Resource's site in Balcombe, Sussex. As of 7.30am, activists blockading the road leading to the company's site have denied entrance to articulated trucks and work vehicles.
15 articulated vehicles are expected at 10am this morning, with tail-backs already visible in the village.
The protest was organised under he name of The Great Gas Gala! and was called in response to an announcement from the Environment Agency and West Sussex County Council that Cuadrilla would start drilling as soon as Saturday[1].
Alex Griffiths, one of those taking part in the blockade, said
'People are realising that if we are going to protect ourselves from this industry we are going to have to do it ourselves. After 5000 signatures on petitions and nearly a thousand objections being sent to the Environment Agency work is still going ahead'.
She continued,
'We have tried other methods. We now have no choice but to take matters into our own hands and protect ourselves from the threat fracking poses to our health and environment'.

Last Saturday (13th), hundreds of people joined a walk and Rally against Roadbuilding in East Sussex. There were guided walks along the route of the Bexhill Hastings Link Road, which started construction in January. After learning about the wildlife that is being destroyed and seeing the grim reality of roadbuilding, the walks all converged on the village of Crowhurst.The Great Gas Gala continues! The final vote was 217 to 205, closer than expected. On the eve of the vote, the Obama administration deployed a lobbying effort to reject the bill, sending NSA director Keith Alexander to meet with lawmakers. In a separate vote, the House also rejected a measure that would have blocked funding for perpetual war under the 2001 act authorizing the so-called war on terror.
This is a major push back against the virtual unlimited funds being given to the military industrial complex post 911.

Cuadrilla have temporary planning permission to drill at site in
Balcombe. Permission expires in September and drilling will take at
least 6 weeks so any significant delays could scupper their plans. They
are exploring for tight (shale) oil, and the Kimmerage Clay shale layer
they are targeting is similar to the Bakken Shale in North Dakota. Full
scale production would involve thousands of wells, pipelines and
compressor stations coating the Sussex countryside. This is before you
get to water contamination, air pollution and accelerating climate

At the heart of resistance to the third runway in the village of Sipson, lies Grow Heathrow. Here an alternative to the cancerous growth of tarmac and pollution is lived everyday. Each subversive seed planted by these guerilla gardeners inoculates the community and land against certain death. Each relationship established builds bridges of hope for life. Each heart that falls in love with the land is connected to a body willing to defend it.
Amidst fresh proposals for a third and fourth runway, Grow Heathrow is under threat of eviction. We’re looking for bold spirits to occupy Grow Heathrow during the busy summer months. Some areas of land are not under threat of eviction and we need help to develop these as our defensive base.
Whether it’s for a few days, a few weeks or a few months, your presence is welcome.
We have restored three 40m long greenhouses where we grow vegetables, run workshops and host open days. We harness energy from two homemade wind turbines and some solar panels, have bicycle, metal and wood workshops, as well as a yurt and a straw bale house. And we’re organising with local residents to transform the Heathrow Villages into a radical self-sufficient community.
We can share skills in the following areas:

A short briefing on the upcoming Operation Vendetta called by Anonymous hacktivists.
Anonymous UK, as part of operation Vendetta, have planned to do a “Million Mask March” on November the 5th 2013 to Parliament from Trafalgar square starting at 6 pm.
If London is not your cup of tea there are plenty of other locations to
choose from, where other Million Mask Marches will be starting at the
same time and date. You can pick from Nebraska, New Jersey, Washington,
California, India, Colardo, Melbourne, Massachusetts, Bulgaria,
Adelaide, Romania and Hong Kong. The aim of this demonstration is to
re-unite all Anonymous activists and spark the movement back into action
against the persecution of internet freedom. The demonstration is
against government censorship and tyranny.
The hacktivist group have called for a silent march to build up the
suspense en route but it remains to be seen how the cookie will crumble
during the event. According to online announcements the dead air will be
broken with none other than the 1812 Overture and other pretty little
ditties to really get the party going for as long as possible. “It is
the target of Anonymous in 2013 to evolve the old traditional idea of
protesting into the new. Anonymous have changed the rules, by turning
this 'new tradition' of petition into more of a festival of ideas,
performance art and symbolic new age discussion that has formed the
political views of the youth of today.”

Come to share your ideas. Create, imagine, resist. We are facing climate crisis, economic crisis and social crisis. Join us to Reclaim the Power!
The Reclaim the Power Camp will be the culmination of months
of hard work and preparation from a team of determined and dedicated
volunteers. We are striving to create a beautiful space that will be
empowering to all who want to seek solutions and take action on the
social, economic, and climate crises. All should feel able to
participate regardless of age, disability, or previous activist
experience.
This article aims to tell you a little bit more about what to expect what you take part in Reclaim the Power; it will be updated as our preparations continue to take shape. You can also follow the latest developments on Facebook and Twitter.
The camp will be organised into four villages; these will be mini-communities where you can pitch your tents, eat, and socialise. Villages will hold daily morning meetings where important information will be shared and any necessary decisions taken. All camp meetings will run through an open, inclusive, and participatory process known as consensus decision making; this seeks to ensure all voices our heard and everyone is happy with meeting outcomes.
Besides the village structure there is a range of other resources for participants to both make use of and contribute to making happen:
Things to bring: tent, sleeping bag, warm clothes, toothbrush/paste, loo roll, sunblock, waterproofs, a torch, and a desire to change the world.
Things not to bring: food (no need), dogs (except from support dogs which are more than welcome), knives (unwise), and belief that nothing can change.
We already know groups such as UK Uncut, Platform, the UK Tar Sands Network, and Disabled People Against the Cuts will be contributing to this day; more groups will be announced in the coming weeks via our Twitter and Facebook page.
In addition to issue-based workshops, there will also be a range of practical workshops. These will include consensus decision making, digital campaigning, media messaging, building a protest camp, and direct action.
Of course, it’s not all super serious; the evenings (except the night before the action) will see broad range of music, comedy, and opportunities to let your hair down and dance! Acts will be announced in the coming weeks.
There will be a part to play for everyone, whether you wish to take direct action or take on one of many supporting responsibilities.
At present, action preparations are still taking shape. However, it promises to take a clear challenge the dangerous new dash for gas and the wider culture of corporate power.

Many individuals are currently hard at work to ensure that, come Friday 16th August, a field in Nottinghamshire will have been transformed into safe and accessible temporary community where all can meet likeminded people, discuss the issues, and prepare for action. Once there, it will be up to everyone who attends to get stuck in and help sustain the camp; you don’t need to bring any skills, just bring your energy and enthusiasm!The camp will be organised into four villages; these will be mini-communities where you can pitch your tents, eat, and socialise. - The Welcome Tent: providing you with a smile, camp booklet, and the knowledge of where to go. The welcome tent will also be the go-to point for any queries that may pop up.
- Kitchens: preparing delicious and energising vegan meals throughout the camp’s duration. You don’t need to bring your own food; just come ready to chop some vegetables and wash up!
- The Kids’ Space: activities and adventures to ensure our youngest participants are able to make the most of their time at the camp (and so are their parents or carers).
- Legal Support: on hand to offer legal advice prior to the action, arrest support during the action, and also to ensure all police activity is comprehensively monitored.
- Wellbeing: providing a space to go for all who feel they require some time-out from the sometimes hectic nature of an action camp.
- Tranquillity: dealing with any conflicts that may arise across the site and supporting everyone in sticking to the safer spaces policy.
- Medics: providing first aid if required.

Popular education
One of the most exciting things about Reclaim the Power is the diverse range of groups and individuals we know to be coming. This provides a fantastic opportunity for the sharing of experience to enable us to join to dots between social, environmental, and economic injustice. Our popular education programme will take place on Saturday 17th August. It will see an extensive range of workshops leading into a whole-camp evening gathering to synthesise the day’s learning. The workshops will cover a full range of interrelated subjects; Extreme Energy, The Cuts, Privilege, and Just Transition are just a small sample from our programme.We already know groups such as UK Uncut, Platform, the UK Tar Sands Network, and Disabled People Against the Cuts will be contributing to this day; more groups will be announced in the coming weeks via our Twitter and Facebook page.

Mass action
